About this listen

Years after her Chinese half-sister assails her with ghost stories set in the mysterious world of Yin, Olivia — a young woman from San Francisco — finds herself in China. Looking for a way to reconcile her past with dreams for her future, Olivia's American assumptions are shaken by Chinese ghosts, but she also finds reasons to hope.

Read by author Amy Tan, The Hundred Secret Senses unfolds a series of family secrets that question the connections between fate and chance, belief and hope, memory and imagination.

Multiplied times throughout the story the narrator sounds like they are reading under water or with a microphone in their pocket. Super muffled. Really wish they would re-record it. Great story

Great book. Terrible audio quality

This was my favorite Amy Tan. She seems to always make her protagonists selfish, but the other characters are delightful. This also had some good Chinese ghosts, which are always fun.

Book is well-crafted and imaginative. The characters are well formed and engaging. The story is interesting and the relationships are not syrupy sweet but endearing

Quan’s character is lovely

Lagged in places but overall a good read. The characters were not fully developed but that may have been necessary to build up to the twist at the end.

I did not anticipate the ending

There are two versions of this audiobook available on Audible- both are unabridged, both read by the author, and both are “remastered from the original Dove Audio recording.” BUT they have different release dates- one (the correct one) is 01-03-22, and the other is 11-18-15.

The 11-18-15 version is muffled, scratchy, and it’s like listening to your neighbors have a calm family dinner through the wall two rooms away. I actually had to return that one (easy to do, just annoying to have to do) and purchased this version (01-03-22). HUGE difference!

Definitely underscores the importance of listening to the Sample before clicking Buy 🫠

Great cross-cultural (american-chinese) narative, magical realism elements, historical fiction focusing on family, tradition and the lost senses of spirituality.

A beautiful story of timeless affection

The author takes Chinese folklore/superstition and makes wonderful current stories. I was left wanting more.

The narration was excellent. The accent used helped draw the characters. I loved the content interweaving Chinese and western cultural view points.

The story was intriguing.

Very poor quality audio. Narrator’s voice often muffled and hard to hear. Incredible story, just hard to hear at times.

Amy Tan’s tender story.
