About this listen

Containers are revolutionizing the way we build, ship, and run our applications. But like all good things, they come with their own set of challenges. This is where Kubernetes enters the scene.

Kubernetes helps you deploy and manage containerized applications at scale. It also abstracts the many different underlying cloud platforms so that you don't need to care whether you're deploying on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or your own on-premises datacenter. With Kubernetes, you can develop your applications on your laptop, deploy to your chosen cloud platform, migrate to a different cloud platform, and even migrate to your private cloud at your on-premises datacenter.

This audio version of The Kubernetes Book starts from the beginning and covers everything you need to know to be proficient with Kubernetes. It even includes two sections dedicated to threat-modeling Kubernetes and real-world security.

You'll learn:

  • Kubernetes cluster architecture
  • How to build Kubernetes Clusters
  • How to deploy and manage applications on Kubernetes
  • How to secure Kubernetes
  • The meaning of terms like cloud-native, microservices, desired state, containerized, and more...

Technical books are obviously difficult to make useful in the audiobook format, yet Nigel Poulton really hits this one out of the park. he knows exactly when to read you a little bit of yaml configuration and when to just skip it and refer you to a repo on the web so that your eyes don't glaze over. He handles the issues of the format with self-deprecating humor and good grace and I was able to learn an enormous amount about recent improvements in Kubernetes while cleaning the entire house.

Gentle humor and practicality about the format

Nigel Poulton has great energy and truly embodies the essence of teaching. His expertise in the field and extensive experience in container technologies makes him a trustworthy source. This was such a fun and easy audiobook to listen to. I highly suggest it to anyone interested in learning on the go.

Do technical books translate into Audible format?

This is one of, if not the best, technical audio books I’ve ever listened to. I just purchased the kindle version so that I can mull on some of the topics further.

The best K8s out there

This book is for beginners. If you have been developing containerised apps for a while - you will find nothing new. However, if you are new to the topic - this book is a great place to start. It covers most important aspects, explains them without jargon and provides well rounded high level overview.

This guy really figured out how to do a tech audiobook. I've listened to a ton of them. In fact, I listened to a different K8S audiobook--or started to--but I couldn't bear to listen to someone read a book that he actually had no understanding of. Nigel, on the other hand, literally wrote the book. And then he re-wrote it--taking into consideration how boring it would be to listen to pages and pages of someone reading code. There are a couple of times in this book where he reads YAML to you, but it is usually abridged because he is fully aware of what the listener is experiencing. This book is for people who need a good intro to Kubernetes. If you already have an understanding of K8S APIs, master roles, pods, deployments, persistent disks and the likes, then you are probably looking for a real book, not an audio book. If you've heard of all those things but you don't know exactly how they fit together then this is the book for you. He does a great job at breaking down a really complex topic into easily digestible components and then shows how it all fits together again.

A technical audiobook done right!

Gives you a solid foundation of k8s and details lots of info about design and security.
Highly recommended book for those ramping up on k8s.

I read his Docker book (phyiscal copy) and got lots of value, so wanted to give a go at the Kubernetes one, but I am at a moment in my life where every second counts and dont have time to sit down and read it at the moment. This audiobook although has less content than the phyical book, is modified to be presented as an audiobook, so author is not reading the book word for word, but reading most of the parts that make sense, and the things that dont translate into audioform, he addresses that by explaining figures and config files or skipping installation procedures and other things that dont translate into audio.

I am very happy with this audiobook and think I will listen to it a second time to let things sink in even more

Very useful to get good knowledge on the go
