Publisher's summary
Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize
Fifteen-year-old Mattie Lee Watson dreams of men, not boys. So when James T. Cullowee, the Kudzu King, arrives in Cooper County, North Carolina, in 1941 to spread the gospel of kudzu—claiming that it will improve the soil, feed cattle at almost no cost, even cure headaches—Mattie is ready. Mr. Cullowee is determined to sell the entire county on the future of kudzu, and organizes a kudzu festival, complete with a beauty pageant. Mattie is determined to be crowned Kudzu Queen and capture the attentions of the Kudzu King. As she learns more about Cullowee, however, she discovers that he, like the kudzu he promotes, has a dark and predatory side. When she finds she is not the only one threatened, she devises a plan to bring him down. Based on historical facts, The Kudzu Queen unravels a tangle of sexuality, power, race, and kudzu through the voice of an irresistibly delightful (and mostly honest) narrator.

One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Critic reviews
"Courtney Patterson brings mid-century North Carolina to life with her narration of this coming-of-age story.... Patterson recounts town, family, and personal secrets at a slow pace that adds to the novel's dramatic effect. Her portrayals range from an oily salesman to a deadbeat father and a boy who is desperate to demonstrate his manhood. Always present is Mattie--hoping to make things right." In 1920, in small-town America, the ubiquitous dry goods store was usually owned by Jews and often referred to as "the Jew store". That's how Stella Suberman's father's store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store, in Concordia, Tennessee, was known locally. Story
June 1957. One hot afternoon in the backwaters of the Deep South, a young black farmer named Tucker Caliban salts his fields, shoots his horse, burns his house, and heads north with his wife and child. His departure sets off an exodus of the state’s entire black population, throwing the established order into brilliant disarray. Told from the points of view of the white residents who remained, A Different Drummer stands, decades after its first publication in 1962, as an extraordinary and prescient triumph of satire and spirit.

Coming of age in Kudzu
Very enjoyable book. Mattie is definitely a character you want to root for. I enjoyed learning about how the government introduced and promoted kudzu in the south as the backdrop of the story. Definitely recommend. Well narrated, too.

delightful story
Enjoyed the read as it brings humor to my own background in rural NC. She is right about Kudzu. You can’t turn your back on II.

Delightful read!
The story and characters live with you while you’re away from the book (although I admit, I did forgo all afternoon chores, one day to finish, reading the Kudzu Queen!) great details and imagery. Having grown up in rural, North Carolina, I particularly appreciated the authenticity of Herman’s characters and settings.

So Good
It took a couple of chapters to build momentum, but then I was hooked. So much heart, so well written, and the narration was up to the task of bringing it all to life.

Vivid characters and engrossing story
I grew up in the south but never knew how assertively the US government pushed the introduction of kudzu. Mimi Herman has created an intriguing story that captured my heart. I loved her characters and didn’t want the tale to end. The author recently spoke to my book club and I was impressed with how much research went into every detail of the book. The reader on this audio recording did a great job. I found her southern accents very easy to listening to, unlike those of many narrators. Overall, this is a five star book for me.
