About this listen

The coauthor of Beowulf’s Children strikes out on his own with this novel of mystic revelation and martial arts.

What if the disciplines we know as the martial arts, meditation, and fasting were mere fragments of a greater, more powerful killing art?

What if that hidden discipline could produce in a man the power to manipulate matter and energy at will?

What if the effect on the mind were so deadly that, uncontrolled, the result would be an inhuman killer?

And what if, unknowingly, a young man in modern-day Los Angeles were to stumble onto the secret, setting in motion The Kundalini Equation?

Critic reviews

“Barnes gives us characters that are vividly real people, conceived with insight and portrayed with compassion and rare skill - and then he stokes the suspense up to levels that will make the reader miss sleep and be late for work.” (Tim Powers, World Fantasy Award-winning author)

I read the book enjoyed the story many years ago. The audible version had me immersed!

Steven Barnes has a knack for drawing a person in with his writing! I enjoyed every minute of the recording. The voice actor did a great job! I recommend the audio book highly!

Informative & Entertaining!

The story took me on a journey that read more like a roller coaster than book. Performance was stupendous and what a beautiful ending. Didn’t see that coming at all. If you enjoy exploring new thought through the lens of entertainment, this is a title for you.

Entertaining and thought provoking

Very good read! This would make a great movie. Loved the action, the science and the metaphysical aspects. I want to know more of the ancient civilization that first discovered this power.

Good idea bad implementation

Too slow. The idea is great but the plot does not move as quickly as it should. I got bored.

A book from my childhood revisited

I read this as a teenager and enjoyed it. Revisiting it as an adult I understood it a lot better and enjoyed it even more.

Ouch

It hurt to wait for the ending; this author as many much better books; start with those.

Great story

I liked the characters and I loved the details in the Los Angeles cityscape. Characters a wee bit flat and simple but that’s ok. It was a fun story with exciting twists.

Great story

The story was hugely, enjoyable, well paced, and plotted with believable characters in the unbelievable situations. They dealt with the crazy things happening the way real people would.

THE KUNDALINI EQUATION

My favorite of Stephen Barnes books, I read this for the first time back in the 80s when I was on active duty in a peacetime army. I read it again while deployed to Iraq, and even wrote Mr. Barnes a fan letter thanking him for the impact the book out on me. Obviously, I recently got it on audiobook and listen to it over the course of a few days. There is so much in this book to think about. But in the end, I think the lesson of this book for me is that in the great battle between good and evil man is not only the chief agent of each but his himself the battlefield. I wish you all well.

Incredible Book.

I read this a couple of times many years ago and really enjoyed listening to the audio version recently.

A nice blend of eastern philosophy, yogic science, and fiction. It would be a great movie or mini series.
