Good series off to a great start

I enjoyed this book, as I do most of Ms Laurens. I don't understand the disparagement of Jill Tanner. I personally liked her narration and did not think it detracted from the story at all. The Bastion Club series is a different twist on the typical Regency novels. I recommend them and Jill Tanner.

Grim-Aced

I honestly don’t think I would have noticed how many, many, many times the author used the word, grimaced, if the narrator hadn’t mispronounced it each and every time.
By the end, not only was it grating on my nerves, I had a distinct vision of the entire cast of characters walking around London looking like they had painful belly gas.
The pronunciation really distracted front the story and the repeated use of the word lowered my opinion of Laurens as an author.

Need real Male voices!

Wish someone would realize we don’t care who reads the books as long as you have a male and female voice instead of someone famous. I don’t recognize these people’s names. Snd just think
Once it’s done you don’t have to have it read again. You’ll make more money!

*semi-spoiler alert

Great start to a new series.
So glad Stephanie Laurens departed from her usually predictable plot line of murder attempts of the main characters.

Horrible Narrator!

I've been an audible listener for well over 10 years. I know good narrators, such as Rosalyn Landor and Matthew Brenner, for example. I've heard several others who lack the ability to perform a book. Today I decided to vent and hope this review is read by somebody, anybody who can address this issue with Audible.

A narrator who does not know how to perform an audio book, realty kills the novel. This narrator, Tanner, reads in a very choppy way, like there are commas after every three or four words! She starts sentences rushing the words, and she mispronounces "grimaced" as "gri maced " way way waaay too many times. (listen to the samples to understand what I'm trying to say)... Authors need to be aware of the number of times they use certain words in a story. Grimace is used as if it was gold, and each time used means Money in their pocket. I wonder if Audible people even monitor the recording! Or if an editor is used at all. If they do, then the monitor needs to listen to excellent narrators so that they will have a solid baseline in order to judge/edit/or how ever they make decisions when approving a recording. I believe the story/plot of this novel is interesting, but the narrator killed it for me. I couldn't tolerate listening to that narrator for 15 hours!

Audible has been around for some time now, and I am shocked to find so many VERY POOR narrators (I can name 3 or 4 others) still being used or the recording is not updated using a better narrator. I suggest a good bit of training is needed in some instances, such as the narrator for this book. I have started to skip books narrated by certain people. The listen is not worth my time or money....

The Lady Chosen by Stephanie Laurens

You can count on Stephanie Laurens to go deep and give you a great journey in another time for your money. Protagonist Tristan is bound and determined to choose his own bride despite her own resistance! Very enjoyable!

Not bad, but pretty average

As a light read in this genre, it's not bad. The romantic plot and the romantic suspense are a bit thin, and for me the hero and heroines motivations aren't always that clear. He's wife hunting, obviously besotted with our heroine, and yet it seems to take forever for it to even occur to him that she might just do. She just doesn't want to get married for some reason. I was never clear as to why not. There's some mystery in the plot, but few surprises. The narrator, Jill Tanner, started out a bit rough. I don't know if she got better or I just grew accustomed to her, but I wound up thinking she did a fair job of it. I've heard better, but heaven knows, I've heard worse. For me, both the book and the narrator were fairly average.

Great story but dreadful narrator

I loved this story but the narrator was difficult to listen to. Pauses were awkward and it was difficult to distinguish character dialogue.

My favorite

Would you consider the audio edition of The Lady Chosen to be better than the print version?

Yes!!!!!! This is my favorite Bastion Club story, and I like Ms Tanner's readings.

What did you like best about this story?

The developing relationship between Tristan and Lenora.

Have you listened to any of Jill Tanner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first book with Ms. Tanner as narrator. I know she's not popular with some. I really like her voice. Mr Prebbles is good but I prefer Ms. Tanner.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Lenora realizes that she may lose Tristan unless she learns to trust.

Agree with the others — long long long long

Hero just wasn’t totally likeable. He got better in the last 25% of the book. Mystery just took too long. Sex was typical Laurens’ euphemisms and way too much of it given how boring it was. It wasn’t a bad story but more mediocre. Glad I didn’t use a credit. Jill Tanner totally and completely sucks at male voices. She is so bad that 1/3 of the time I couldn’t figure out who was talking, the woman or the man. She also does pause too much as others say. if you have a lot of time, get it on audible prime, really like Laurens generally, then maybe.
