About this listen

Frank Stockton was an American writer and humorist, best known for a series of innovative children's fairy tales that were widely popular. His most famous fable is "The Lady or the Tiger?" (1882), about a man sentenced to an unusual punishment for having a romance with a king's beloved daughter. Taken to the public arena, he is faced with two doors, behind one of which is a hungry tiger that will devour him. Behind the other is a beautiful lady-in-waiting, whom he will have to marry if he finds her.Public Domain (P)1982 Jimcin Recordings Anthologies Literature & Fiction Young Adult

Editorial reviews

Although best known as a children's story, The Lady or the Tiger will please listeners of any age. Walter Zimmerman narrates this lyric contemplation of justice and human fate. The plot centers around an accused man's trial: He must choose between two closed doors, one of which will reveal a hungry tiger, and the other, a beautiful women. Which door will he choose, and what will be the outcome of his sentence? Zimmerman's kind voice and precise narration give this fairy tale a sense magic and a depth notwithstanding its 18-minute length.
