Publisher's summary

In the second decade of the 21st century, the world is struck by two catastrophes: a new mini-ice age and a plague to dwarf all previous experiences. Rising out of the disaster is the character known to history as "Bandit Six", an American Army officer caught up in the struggle to rebuild the world and prevent the fall of his homeland - despite the best efforts of politicians, both elected and military.

The Last Centurion is a memoir of one possible future, a world that is a darkling mirror of our own. Written "blog-style", it pulls no punches in its descriptions of junk science, bad strategy, and organic farming.

Critic reviews

"Dan John Miller’s delivery is perfect for this no-punches-pulled first-person narrative by Bandit Six, the Last Centurion. Laced with crude language and dark images of the future, Miller’s reading is straightforward and army tough." (AudioFile Magazine)

"Ringo excels in the depiction of combat, managing to capture the carnage and horror while maintaining a sense of the absurd....with the unexpected twists that Ringo has made his hallmark." (Publishers Weekly)

Timely for 2021

I know, written in 2008 and forshadowing a Hillary presidency, but it gives you chills listening to it in 2021 and living under a post-Covid Biden regime. Very prescient, Mr. Ringo.

Great story trashed by F-bombs

If the author could have lost one word - endlessly repeated - I would recommend this story to middle and high school readers. It so accurately describes the origin and reaction of the world to a viral epidemic that I thought it was written this year, not eight years ago.

2 hours in and it's a right wing diatribe so far

and kinda ironic in hindsight the right wing, thus far in my listening, had literally the completely opposite reaction in 2020

I might update when I finish

Refreshing and entertaining

Really enjoyed listening to a book that intertwined both fantasy and realism into a background of world collapse.

Outstanding book that is eerily prescient.

A tragedy American politicians did not read and heed this book.
Ringo is so perceptive, articulate, and honest about how our society really works that he makes a book that is essentially written as a documentary an extremely interesting read.
In this story written in 2007/2008 the author predicts a 2019 world shattering pandemic caused by a virus released by China. He predicts that the virus will be released by China in 2019 and that the impact will be much worse because the CCP covers up how severe it is and obstructs the investigations by WHO and other countries. Was he able to see the future? :)
If politicians had read this book, then maybe then a travel quarantine could have been implemented and saved hundreds of thousands of American lives instead of leftists calling a quarantine racist and thereby killing untold numbers of Americans.
While the author is definitely a conservative, the reviewers that want to portray Ringo as a FAR right wing writer must be VERY FAR left wing America haters. For example, Ringo shows a Democrat politician as someone who does the best job of responding to the virus, not something a far right wing author typically does. He also supports forced inoculations - something that would be an anathema to most conservatives but is currently espoused by many left wing politicians.
Overall he points out the flaws of politicians from both parties so that may be what causes some far leftists to not like his politics. They must ignore that he considers Bush Jr to be as bad a president as the democrat in office when this story takes place.

I loved this book

The main character was a warrior farmer a strong echo of Cincinaticus a hero of the Roman Empire. The plot of book took a lot of swipes at price control, organic farming, female presidents, global warming and even an argument that a military coup might not be so bad. The author has a very strong historical background and made some really good arguments based on historical facts. This is really a great book and it will make the reader stop and think about the current world situation. Of course you must remember that the book is fictional entertainment.

I love this book

Any book that can make liberals screech like this is a must have for anyone looking for a realistic view of the country or planet during a crisis like this. I never tire of seeing liberals heads explode.
