Publisher's summary

Full disclaimer - this has to be one of the weirdest stories I have ever written, and I have written a lot of weird old stories.

Just imagine you walk into a cheesy old greasy-spoon diner, the kind that ought to hand out antacid along with a napkin, knife, and fork.

You ask the waitress for eggs and bacon, and she brings you a plate with live chicken on it. I mean, feathers and beak and the whole bonanza. Just think about a mix of Kafka and O'Henry and you are somewhere close to the mark.

If you want to find out just what comes next, then you ought to pick this story up and give it a listen. I guarantee it's cholesterol-free.

Go ahead and listen to this story. I dare you. Are you a chicken?

What Comes First

This is the first book I have listened to by Steve Vernon. This short story is truly bizzare, entertaining and a little disturbing. Lots of what the f*** moments that will keep you listing till the end.

What came first, the Chicken or the Egg?

What is it all about? It's a story about actions and consequences and taking on personal responsibility. It conveys this in such a bizarre manner that that I wonder if trying to find the deeper meaning is missing the point of the story. Apparently, above all, this story is about paying for your eggs before they hatch.

This story feels like The Metamorphosis by Kafka but with chicken puns and euphemisms scattered throughout the story. Steve Vernon admits that this is the weirdest story he has ever written and, without reading his whole collected works, I can still believe that to be true. It's very... weird!

A nice bit of magical darkness

First Steve Vernon story I have read and found it to be very entertaining. I enjoy the realm of magical realism and this story has that. I won’t give any spoilers. I enjoyed the construction of the gut punch at the end... no pun intended.

Breakfast is important but you better pay for eggs

Only thing weird about this story was that a chicken would lay more than 1 egg at a time, I have never seen it happen in my life before. Other than that very well delivered short story that teaches the important life lesson regarding to pay for what you ordered.
All-in-all, it felt like someone describing you a disturbing dream they had, with each minute the story getting more & more surreal & finally a twisted conclusion, its all in the title
