A near flawless magical adventure you need to read

*This book was given to me by the author at my request, and I provided this voluntary, unbiased review.*

4.9/5

This book is outstanding! Think of it as a cross between Jumper and The Prestige, set in the modern day. I was really impressed with the writing in this book; the memories, scenery, and emotions are all artfully portrayed by Hunt. It was a really quick read for me and I enjoyed every piece of it; I was wishing there were more to it! I could connect with the MC, and also felt for other characters in the story as well. Hunt does a good job at leading us down a certain path, and then blowing it up in our face. I'm usually good at predicting what will happen in a story, but this one took a surprising turn (when you read it, you'll see why I chose those 2 movies as comparisons). My only gripe with the story is that is was too short; I felt greedy and wanted more -- either in lore or fleshing out of some of the trips/interactions, etc. Other than that, this is a nearly flawless story that I would highly recommend and am also excited to know if there will be a sequel. Well done.

Lots of Potential

Pretty good first book, there's a ton of potential for a really good series. The story is a bit YA, but moves at a good pace. Characters are likable and I believe with more attention and depth, this could be a really fun group to build around.

could have been great but ended up only good

I received a free review copy of this book at my request, my review is voluntary and unbiased.

This book is pretty good when it isn't beating the equine cadaver of sympathy. Our main character makes a lot of bad decisions almost exclusively for the purposes of being a plot device. There is a section where our nearly all powerful main character is abused for literally years on end because... fostercare is bad, and he doesn't want to use his magic for nebulous reasons that stop mattering as soon as he is no longer in that situation. That is to say there is a lot of forced behavior in this book for the sake of drama and building sympathy, if you can look past that the story is pretty good.

There is a fair amount of intrigue packed into this little book and for it's flaws it was still fairly fun. I certainly don't regret listening to it, I just see how it could have been a much better version of itself with a couple tweaks

There were a few instances where I thought the narrator was overacting but after thinking about Ethan is a bit of a moron and a drama queen so it actually fit alright.

Magical!

Good story and narration!

Ethan is an orphan who grew up practicing illusions with his uncle who owns a magic shop. Suddenly something changes and he finds out that he can really do magic. Unfortunately there are forces that he doesn't understand and some of them want him dead?!

This was a fun story with lots of potential for future books!

Fun Little Book

The Last Magician is a good YA modern day fantasy story. The premise and story are pretty good and it works pretty well. The characters are interesting enough and likeable, The pace and action in the book keep it moving along and quite enjoyable. The book follows Ethan Hayes who is a young boy living in Maine with his uncle Sebastian because his mother had passed away. His uncle owns a magic shop in the small town and Ethan grows up there learning all the different magic tricks at his Uncle's request until he can do each one perfectly. Learning these tricks was his Uncle's way of training Ethan in the are of Real Magic without Ethan even being aware. His Uncle finally tells Ethan that he can do real magic and at first Ethan is disbelieving of this but soon comes to realize the truth. Shortly after things get a bit crazy for Ethan and he is soon on his own and finds himself in New York where he begins performing 'Magic Tricks' on the street which brings him to the attention of others and begins a whole different chapter in his life.

There are many little surprises and twists in turns in the book, a bit of romance, lots of magic and some good action and magical battle sequences. The narration by Brad Matherly was done extremely well and fits the character and story well. This book was very fun, quick, enjoyable and worth a listen.
