About this listen

In the year 2047, Lochlan takes the bus to his soul-sucking job answering phones to remain unnoticed. Life is easier that way. Little attachment. Few friends. That means less people caught in the crossfire when he loses control again.

The last time he came close to losing it was when he was around Zemila. That was five years ago, just before he disappeared. That was why he disappeared. He’s good at that. Disappearing. Resettling. Being overlooked.

That is, until the visions started. Prophetic visions.

That’s when he knew the Old World had found him.

These weren’t the fun kind of visions…if there were such a thing. They were the watch-people-die kind, the try-to-stop-it-before-it-happened kind, the maybe-save-some-lives kind. He thought the visions were his redemption. A redemption he didn’t believe he deserved. When one of them led him to Zemila, he thought it meant he wasn’t a danger to her anymore. That he wasn’t a danger to anyone anymore.

Power attracts enemies. Lochlan thought he’d learned this lesson.

He was wrong. Wrong about the visions. Wrong about everything. And it was going to cost him.

Him and everyone he loved.

Loved the concept.

I loved the concept of the main character. A mythological Demi God in the future very cool. I also really liked your magic system. It’s simple enough to understand but complex enough to where it’s not a get out of jail free card. Overall a great listen. I highly recommend this if you enjoy magic and technology complementing each other but still grounded in a realistic future.

A story full of dark magic

I felt bad for Lochlan because of his curse. He lived a life running from his past & evil. He tried to keep to himself with few friends and a boring job. He thought hiding from his past would keep Zemilla safe but he was wrong. A great read. This is a new author for me & I am impressed. Great job!

Yesss great story!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

I am not a native English speaker, it takes a bit longer for me to listen to books and completely understand them, sometimes because of the narrator it is almost not doable. That was this time definitely not the case. The narrator did an awesome job, His Irish accent is just great haha.

This book is definitely a must have and must listen, The demi god Llochlan is a great character, it is full of magic, drama, adventure, everything a good book need!!
I started it and couldn't put my headphones down and I don't have that a lot with books I don't know.

I already finished the second book, but I won't spoil it here ;)

Solid story, with a few nitpicks

So, first off, yes it's good. I definitely feel it was an enjoyable read. Narration was on point, the characters felt well written, and human. Their banter and behavior felt realistic pretty much all the time. I liked how the author used various context clues in the visions for the protagonist to figure out what was going on. It felt a lot like that scene in Minority Report, where he's trying to figure out where the murder happens, and doing things like checking time of day with shadows, street numbers on houses, etc. Very nicely done. All in all, an enjoyable book/story, and I've already bought book 2.

Now, the parts that I didn't like. It's mostly just one plot point, and it basically boils down to what I consider an overuse of a particular trope that personally gets on my nerves. The drama by omission trope. Where everyone just keeps NOT saying things to people, and the fact that nobody is saying things, is what drives the story into the next scene, and then there's this big "coming clean" info dump scene before the climax. I genuinely got angry at one point in the story and shouted out loud "JUST TELL HER ALREADY!!" as I felt the protagonist's habit of deflection and avoidance, was actively approaching the Blundering Idiot level. The author also had him constantly ask questions in response to questions. Instead of actually providing information that would help the situation, he would be like "huh? what? what do you mean?" What do YOU mean what do they mean you numbskull?! It's VERY clear what they asked you!

I get that we, as humans, often keep our thoughts hidden, and don't share with people. And I get that for the protagonist in particular, this is a common defensive habit. But, come on!! There is a point where it becomes annoying. And I know this, because she even had other characters in the story get pissed and yell at the protagonist for the way he's behaving. And I have to agree with them, it was incredibly frustrating to go through scene after scene of him constantly dancing away from everything.

I also didn't like the use of one of my most hated tropes the Explanation Interruptus! Two people will be talking, one of them is about to reveal important information that will improve things in some way...and then a random interruption from offscreen happens, momentarily sidetracking them...and then they just go "nevermind...it doesn't matter." I....HATE...this trope. It's SO frustrating.

Now, I know I went into detail about those negative aspects, and I don't want you to think they are a huge issue. They're not, not really. I DID very much enjoy this book, but when those particular plot elements came up, for me anyway, they were super glaring and frustrating. I can't say they were used poorly? I mean they're some very standard writing tools for storytelling, but...I just, ugh, they personally irk me a lot, so they felt incredibly apparent. Still, very good book, very solid start. Would've liked for it to be longer, but hey, first novel and all, can't really fault her for trying to keep it concise and on topic. And I will be starting book 2 after submitting this review.

You could do a lot worse by taking a chance with this novel. Plus, Hannah is just a really amusing and cheerful person, and I love her youtube channel.

Fascinating

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*

This was a lot of fun to read. I enjoyed the premise, the magic, the mythology, and the suspense. I really enjoyed the addition of celtic and demigods into the story - what an interesting twist!

The characters were well developed and deeply flawed, which gave them a believable quality. The world building was top notch and rich with texture.

I cannot wait to find out what happens next.
