About this listen

Sparkling with magical realism, this book follows nine seemingly separate stories that dovetail in an unexpected and profound climax. It begins with a mysterious pow-wow to be held inside a colossal tipi, 3.5 miles tall and three miles wide, which suddenly appears on the outskirts of a small town. Advertising fliers blanket the area and all of Indian country, billing itself as "The Pow-Wow of all Pow-Wows." There is a stipulation to the pow-wow though: only full-blooded Native Americans are allowed to dance, drum, or attend the grand event.

Mixed-blooded Native Americans and non-Native Americans protest the gathering. Meanwhile, nine travelers make their journeys to the huge get-together, including a blind teenager lovingly transporting the dead body of his grandmother, who was the last medicine woman, to the pow-wow she wanted to attend before her death. None of the nine travelers realize that they are part of something more important, something much bigger than what they all seek from being at the pow-wow. And at the story's end, an epic battle between good and evil ensues that will change the world forever.

Mesmerizing

Deceptively simple, yet wonderfully layered and hypnotic in its weaving of a fable of identity and being. Quite enjoyable.

Wonderfully creative but so real!

This book is so imaginative, funny, witty, educational and moving. In an entertaining way, it really demonstrates the centuries-old plight and spirit of Native Americans, which continue to this day.

What a wonderful story

I am not a native person, outside of Europe, but I am envious of native, indigenous, cultures round the world for their honest interpretation, love, community and values. To follow this story from a non-native perspective, the listener/reader must have some background in native mythology and especially the conditions under which modern natives have been forced to live with. Also, please future readers/listeners, if the story isn't grammatically correct... realize the story is written as it is told and if it followed english conventions any further, the magic would be lost, too, in the wake.
That Native Thomas and Steven Paul Judd created a literary art piece. Meshing, intertwining, weaving lives, experiences, traditional and modern, beautiful.

The best modern legends I've EVER heard!!

What Catch-22 did for the the better understanding of the everyday military mindset, military logic & reason...this book does for the place the American Indian lives every hour of every day. If you want to feel what the Jews felt when they heard the Christ child prophecy for the first time? hear this story without your past getting in your way....every prophecy has a beginning, open yourself to this one. The indigenous peoples of North America tell the history of these continents in our stories; mountains erupting simultaneously, land bridges and how they were formed, great lakes before they disappeared; your geologists confirm those same events but the "blue eyed tribe" & children of Christ never complete that circle of thought. The oldest known pair of sandals in North America were found in OR under the soot of Mt. Mazama in the 1930s and we have a memory of that past down from elder to child for centuries, without the use of letters or symbols, this story will rank among them in a time you and I will never know.
