About this listen

If you thought you might die, would you bargain everything that mattered to you? Could you keep such a bargain?

Let The Lode Stone, a historical fiction novel by award-winning author Jane Ann McLachlan, take you on a gripping journey to the south of France in the 12th Century.

Three years ago Melisende’s husband, Simon, went off with Lord Barnard and his men to join King Phillip of France on the Third Crusade.

Now Lord Barnard is dead and his son, Lord Charles, has come home from the crusades with the last of their men - and Simon is not among them. Lord Charles claims Simon died saving his life. Melisende suspects there is more to the story. Left to fend for herself and her two young children, Melisende is determined to discover what really happened to Simon at the battle for Acre. The truth is far stranger and more unsettling than she could ever have imagined.

If you enjoy true-to-life, well-researched historical fiction based on real events, with all the passion, drama, and heartache of life in Medieval Europe, you’ll love The Lode Stone, written by multi-award-winning author Jane Ann McLachlan.

A fascinating story.

This was a fascinating story. It really had the flavour of the times, with the deep held religious beliefs and also the superstitions that were believed. The main character was Melisande, the wife of Simon, a blacksmith. There was a mystery as to how Simon had met his death during the Crusades. Something that Lord Charles seems to know more about than he says. It illustrated how difficult it was to be a business woman in what was very much a man’s world. Also, how a Lord was all important and powerful. Melisande was a strong and brave woman who was determined to do the best for her family. The only part I didn’t enjoy was the ending, although it was all resolved, it finished quite abruptly. The narrator performed an excellent reading, changing her voice to suit the characters and bringing the story to life.

More excellent Medieval historical fiction

Having thoroughly enjoyed The Sorrow Stone, I eagerly looked forward to this title. The Lode Stone is another well-researched and well-written piece of historical fiction that offers believable characters and excellent depictions of life in the middle ages. This story is actually a pair of seemingly unrelated tales that meld into one in the end.
Lillian Rachael gives us a beautiful narration complete with appropriate inflection and none of the valley-girl-like rising questioning tone at the end of phrases and sentences as is so common in speech today. Well read! Great narration of a great tale.

Medieval Historical Fiction

This is the second book in the Medieval Stones Series. The story is well written, and enthralling. The characters are great, and the storyline is original, intricate, and interesting. The story is different than expected, but this is a great Medieval Historical Fiction. Lillian Rachel did a good job with the narration. #AudiobookObsession
