About this listen

At the young age of 16, Andy Adams left his San Antonio home to follow his dream of becoming a cowboy. Going on long drives with some of the 19th century's hardiest cowboys, he learned his trade through many adventurous years of trial and error. This account of his true experiences includes dusty cattle drives, brandings, stampedes, dangerous river crossings, and remarkable encounters with the Blackfoot, Oglala, and Platte Indian tribes. With impeccable realism and a reporter's eye for detail, Adams brings the untamed West and its legendary characters vividly to life. This program is part of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame Classic Western series.Recording (P)1996 by Audio Literature Americas Biographies & Memoirs Fiction Westerns Cowboy Old West History

The Log of a Cowboy

Really enjoyed this one. The narrator did an excellent job and it was neat that some of the places mentioned I work in and around those areas. It really gave you some bits and pieces of how it was like out on the job here without getting stuck in mundane details.

Awesome

Finally a factual story of the day to day, sometime hour-long experience of a cowboy on a 1882 cattle drive.

Enlightening

This is good; a true account of what it was like to be on a trail ride / cattel drive in the old days from Mexico to Montana. It is interesting, does not bog down, and seems very true and realistic. It is not real long. The narration is good.

Trail riders.

This is as fine and concise of a explanation of what the old cowboys did. It's really awe inspiring. And Michael Martin Murphey's performance was absolutely outstanding!

Exceptional Abridged

The fictional account of a 3,000 mile cattle drive written by an experienced cowboy driver. The narration is exceptional. Sadly though, this is Abridged but regardless, 5 stars.

Lots of fun

-- if you like cows, cowboys, stories from the old West and a bit of banjo music.
Thank goodness I'd watched lots of Gunsmoke so I knew just what they'd do when the herd reached Dodge City :-)
