About this listen

They’re known as the bebés robados, or “stolen babies”–children stolen at birth from their mothers and sold to wealthy families around Spain. For decades, European reporters and activists have tried to penetrate the secretive networks responsible for the crimes, typically with little success.

Until now. In The Lost, veteran journalists Matteo Fagotto and Matilde Gattoni investigate the story of a woman named Ana Belén Pintado, a middle-aged woman from a small village in Central Spain. At the age of 40, Ana Belén discovered her birth parents were not who she thought they were, and soon, she had embarked on a quest to discover who she really was. It was a quest that would bring her from a small town in the Spanish countryside to the halls of the powerful Catholic church–and ultimately, to the courts. The Lost is an intimate, shocking tale of justice mislaid, of family and blood, and of the lengths we’ll go to make sense of our pasts.

Well done.

Shocking story of a brave woman. Especially shocking, the numbers revealed!
The resiliency of the child and the parental bond is known so deeply by those who have been separated for whatever reason. Not surprisingly, the Catholic Church formed the protection needed to perpetuate these criminal acts for so long and block any accountability.

Powerful and Thought Provoking

The Lost is a very powerful and thought-provoking book about baby trafficking for money. This is a true story that is absolutely heartbreaking, cruel, insensitive farce perpetrated by doctors, and self-righteous members of the Catholic church who thought that they were God to decide who should have children and who should not. Wow! My heart goes out to the many families and children who had their lives torn apart and turned upside down because of these monsters.
I hope this book opens up discussions and persecutions of these disgusting excuses for human beings. My heart breaks just typing this. The story may be hard to get through but it is worth it because it will open your eyes to the many horrors that parents unwittingly face and the fact that it still happens in today's society is absolutely ridiculous. A shout goes out to the authors /narrators for shining a bright light on such a dark topic.
I received this book for free upon my request. I am so happy I did. This is my honest, unbiased review that I am gladly and voluntarily leaving of my own accord.

Stolen Babies

True, very sad story. Hard to listen to at times. I just don't understand how people get away with such things and never get caught or punished. my heart breaks for the birth mother's and their babies.

Very powerful

A sad storyline but I’m glad I listened to it. Starts a little slow but when you listen it picks up quickly and gets your attention.

Investigative Podcast

This is in podcast format. I didn't really know that going in, but it didn't matter. The two individuals responsible for this podcast were excellent in their research and interviews. They follow an adult woman on her journey of first discovering that she was adopted and then discovering that she was stolen from her mother at birth, and in essence, sold. This practice was not even that long ago. This woman was born in 1973, in Spain. Very interesting podcast, exquisitely well done. Highly recommend.

Interesting story

It’s interesting how things happen, perhaps good intentions only to snowball over time into a Nightmare

Absolutely believable

This was a shocking yet believable story. Yet another atrocity perpetrated by greed and covered up by the Catholic Church.

I love how the narrator's researched and shared

I love how the narrator's built up the story a little at a time and appreciated the podcast layout for the episodes. This was very haunting and sorrowful at times so those little breaks gave me the chance to think through some things. I love how they shared facts and struggles of the legal system. It had so many universal struggles and considerations of what may occur in other places as well. I hope the stolen babies and robbed parents are able to have more reunions and receive justice.
