Publisher's summary

From the authors of the number-one New York Times best seller Rhett & Link's Book of Mythicality and creators of the internet’s most-watched daily show, Good Mythical Morning, a thrilling and darkly funny novel about two best friends fighting the sinister forces at the heart of their Southern town.

It's 1992 in Bleak Creek, North Carolina, a sleepy little place with all the trappings of an ordinary Southern town: two Baptist churches, friendly smiles coupled with silent judgments, and a seemingly unquenchable appetite for pork products. Beneath the town’s cheerful façade, however, Bleak Creek teens live in constant fear of being sent to The Whitewood School, a local reformatory with a record of putting unruly teens back on the straight and narrow - a record so impeccable that almost everyone is willing to ignore the mysterious deaths that have occurred there over the past decade.

At first, high school freshmen Rex McClendon and Leif Nelson believe what they’ve been told - that the students’ strange demises were all tragic accidents. But when the shoot for their low-budget horror masterpiece, PolterDog, goes horribly awry - and their best friend, Alicia Boykins, is sent to Whitewood as punishment - Rex and Leif are forced to question everything they know about their unassuming hometown and its cherished school for delinquents.

Eager to rescue their friend, Rex and Leif pair up with recent NYU film school grad Janine Blitstein to begin piecing together the unsettling truth of the school and its mysterious founder, Wayne Whitewood. What they find, with Alicia's life hanging in the balance, will leave them battling an evil beyond their wildest teenage imaginations - one that will shake Bleak Creek to its core.

This Audible book includes an exclusive interview with Rhett and Link, conducted by Stevie Levine, host of the Good Mythical Morning recap show, Let's Talk About That. In this conversation, Rhett and Link dive into their childhoods in Buies Creek and how they influenced their lives and writing.

Editor's Pick

A smart mystery wrapped in humor
"There are some pros and cons to being the comedy editor here at Audible. One con is the "UNSUBSCRIBE" emails I get from coworkers whenever I joke about being old in my newsletters. (Looking at you, Catherine). One pro is that I get to do cool things like fly out to LA to meet and interview "Intertainers" like Rhett & Link about their debut novel. The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek really has it all. It’s funny, mysterious, smart, and filled with 90s references—which is perfect for me because I’m SO OLD. Plus Audible favorite Vikas Adam narrates it, which means that not one second of this listen will be dull. If you don’t know who Rhett & Link are now, well, this is a good introduction. And if you do know their work, expect the unexpected."

Engrossing to the last word

I was expecting a light, humorous suspense/mystery novel by creators Rhett and Link, pretty much in step with their other narrative projects thus far. What I ended up with was a thrilling ride that had me guessing and on the edge of my seat the entire read, and left me wanting more when the story ended. The deep, entangled story and complex characters rival any in the genre.

Vikas Adam as narrator brings to life these rich, fully fleshed out characters in a way that keeps you pulled in to the story.

I can’t recommend the read/listen enough for anyone who likes suspense, humor or the 90’s!

thank you rhett & link

what an amazing book. it is quintessentialy mythical and easy to tell that it was written by rhett and link, which I think really adds another layer to the story. if you're not a fan of the duo already, dont let that turn you away - the book is so colorful and storied without any prior knowledge. the voice acting here is wonderful and and interview at the end is like a mini special earbiscuit. thanks for the mythicality ❤️

Good but

Good story but seriously Rhett and link putting in all those PC lines? Doesn’t add to the story, just feels forced. Like come on.
Overall, story started out a little slow but once it got going it was hard to put down. Watch the episode of Good Mythical Morning where they go to their old home town. Really puts you in the mindset of where they are and what it’s like there. Performance was great too, loved the different voices.

One of the best books I've read in a long time

The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek is an incredible read. So charming and funny but still unafraid to go to dark places. An incredible achievement for Rhett and Link, and an amazing gift to mythical beasts everywhere.

Wow boys... Just WOW!!!

This book blew me out the water (or should I say creek) lol! But seriously I knew this book was gonna be good and I had anticipated it for some time. This story is so detailed that as I was listening I could truly close my eyes and my mind would woosh to Bleak Creek and I felt like I was there with the whole gang. One of my favorite parts was the dueling churches and the prayer scene. (hilarious and very relatable) Also the small town feel hit really home as well and I really identified at the end of chapter 5 😥. But I really really hope and pray there will be more after this book because you have opened my mind and heart the Bleak Creek! Thank You Rhett & Link!
p.s. I enjoyed this book just as much as the first HARRY POTTER book and would love to be along for the ride if y'all decide to continue the story.

A riveting story!

This book will have you captivated from the start! The authors have woven such a creative, well-written tale that is so complex both in plot and characters. I’ve never read a book in which the story seemed to come life in front of me, but this one did. It’s an emotional roller coaster, but it’s one worth going on for sure! I highly recommend this book!
