About this listen

“Elusive, haunting.” (New York Times Book Review)

A husband’s search for his wife’s lover, lost amid the turbulence of the Yom Kippur War, is the heart of this dreamlike novel. Through five different perspectives, Yehoshua explores the realities and consequences of the affair and the search, laying bare deep-rooted tensions within family, between generations, between Jews and Arabs.

“[A] profound study of personal and political trauma.” (Daily Telegraph)

"Has the symmetry of an elegantly cut gem.” (The New Yorker)

I found the voice of the young Arab and the treatment of him by the garage owner and the Sephardic old lady fascinating. They were both fond of the Arab but also disdainful. Essentially the garage owner found the young man, whom he exploited, expendable. The old lady, who depended on the youth, feared and insulted him. Underlying the emotional life of the garage owner was the death of his son. The garage owner becomes with age parasitic in respect to his workers, all Arab.

No relationship is straightforward

The only criticism is that some of the Hebrew names and places are mispronounced. The story/book is fabulous. While not necessary to know to enjoy a great book, I think the more familiar one is with Bible, Rabbinics and Jewish history the richer the story is.

Fabulous fabulous, but
