About this listen

"I have given you freedom, and I have given you individuality, and I have given you just a little taste of something that is always yours. You just have to claim it."

The Magic of Self-Respect is the second volume in a series titled Authentic Living. So much of the experience of everyday life, says Osho in this insightful guide, is shaped by religious and social conditioning - and we are not even aware of the fact. We are constantly being pulled away from the unique nature that is our birthright. In place of that original and unique self, a false self, called the "ego", is constructed, and it eventually gains control of our creativity, our ideas about what it means to be successful, our relationships, and our very experience of who we are. At the same time, he argues, the collection of egos known as "society" shapes our political, educational, and religious institutions, which in turn combine to force the same old patterns onto new generations.

In this series Osho shows how to discard these old patterns in favor of a new and nurturing trinity of watchfulness, awareness, and alertness. The talks that are published in this Authentic Living series were given by Osho in the United States as the beginning of a new phase of his work.

Deep Osho

This is one for someone who has spent much time with his other books, talks, or time with him. If a critic or beginner listens to this they will not understand . However, this book is most intimate, and revealing. People who are not on the path of awakening, self realization, or who don't already love Osho should start elsewhere.

Amazing!!!

The delusion under which the human animal exists is amazing!!! However, like a frog in a frying pan under low heat, we never realize that this low heat of cultural conditioning is killing our pure freedom of being, just as the frog is eventually fried. However the blessing of listening to an awakened being like Osho sparks the realization that we are all pure beings when the delusion is seen through.

An original thinker -- beyond the mind!

This recording has a lot of childhood stories of osho's mischief which are hilarious! And it contains a lot of original thinking, which is a trademark of Osho. Responding to others calling his movement a cult, he says that modern so-called religions are all cults:

"Religion is basically rebellion against dead traditions, meaningless conventions, it is a revolution. To bring birth of a new man, a new consciousness. The cult is not concerned with the new man. The cult wants the new man never to be born."

All spiritual traditions teach surrender to either God or guru. But not Osho:

"I do not teach the ego, hence I cannot teach surrender. Because surrender is nothing but the subtlest form of the ego. Surrender is not against the ego, it is an in fact an act of the ego. Who surrenders? And by surrendering, who becomes humble? Who becomes meek? It is the ego standing upside down. It makes no difference whether the ego standing on its legs or on its head, In fact it is more dangerous when it is on it's head because you will not be able to recognize it."

Good stuff

I loved listening to his stories, the entire book is not about self respect, but it's worth a listen.

Not as inspiring as “The Buddha Said”

In this book Osho talks more about his own life, and about religion.
While this is interesting in its own way, I prefer “The Buddha Said” over this one.
