About this listen

Peachy Carnahan and Daniel Dravot set off into the wild northern passes of India to build not a fortune, but an empire. They find a likely spot in Kafiristan, where Dravot manages to set himself up, not only as king, but as a god, and Peachy takes charge of the army. But ruling isn't always as easy as it looks. This program also includes the short stories "The Drums of the Fore and Aft" and "Mary Postgate," originally published in 1899.Public Domain (P)1989 Recorded Books Anthologies & Short Stories Classics European Fiction Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Literary History & Criticism Short Stories World Literature

Editorial reviews

Narrator George Taylor’s raspy voice and English accent perfectly match the "hut, one, two" pace of Kipling’s explorations of colonialism in the nineteenth century. The short stories that accompany the novella are also treated in an effective and dramatic way by this master narrator. Taylor characterizes the men of ambition with the best stiff upper lip imaginable. Moments of daring get the full dramatic treatment, with Taylor leading the charge. Listeners in search of adventure and bravery will find two companions in Taylor and Kipling.
