About this listen

Award-winning science-fiction mastermind Kenneth Johnson blends epic adventure, romance, and evocative drama into an intense supernatural thriller rooted in one of the great untold legends of human history.

New York City, New Year's weekend, 2001. Jillian Guthrie, a troubled young journalist, stumbles onto a tantalizing mystery: the same man, unaged, stands alongside Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Gandhi in three different photographs spanning eighty-five years of history.

In another part of town, Will - an enigmatic thirty-three-year-old of immense charm, wit, and intelligence - looks forward to the new year with hope and trepidation. Haunted by his secret past and shadowed by a dangerous stranger, he finds himself the object of an intense manhunt spearheaded by an ambitious Vatican emissary and an elderly former UN envoy named Hanna.

During the next forty-eight hours, a catastrophic event unites Will, Jillian, and Hanna - and puts them in the crosshairs of a centuries-old international conspiracy. Together, the three must unravel an ancient curse that stretches back two millennia and beyond, and face a primal evil that threatens their lives and thousands more.

Amazing performance

Narration by a full cast was what got me interested in the first place, actually. Each chapter is narrated by a different character and all are related to the main story.

Main concerns, plot-wise, are that it takes very long for things to start making sense, and that there is sexual abuse/assault which I do not like to read/listen to so descriptively (as in, not hard data but actual description).

On the bright side, the multiple perspectives and the mystery/sci-fi aspect would make this an excellent TV/Netflix series!

Listen to it at 1.25x

A well told and interesting take on the legend. Perhaps a few to many Forrest Gump-esque coincidental meetings and deeds, but that's really a minor factor.

I would recommend listening to this at a slightly increased speed. At normal speed, everyone seems to be reading at an intentionally slow pace. Sped up to 1.25x, it seemed to flow at a speed similar to other audio books.

Yet another disappointing rant about Christianity

The story was intriguing but just led down the path to an ignorant rant about all Christianity since AD 400.

An Immortal running from the Church

An intriguing story about a man of all ages who has fled mentions of Rome century after century. Will is a champion of good time and again trying to free himself from “the curse.” Although abuses of the Catholic Church over two millennia provided the backdrop for Will’s history, the anti-Catholic bias was at times irritating. The author uses many vignettes from Will’s history to show how he has been a force for good. Unfortunately, those stories were taken to the extreme. How could anyone be in the right place at the right time as often as Will. How could Will have become friends with so many important people when he could spend no more than three days in any one place.

Great book and readers

We thoroughly enjoyed the story. And for an audiobook having so many actors playing the parts truly made the book come to life. I hope more audiobooks do the same.

Great Narration Performance

This was wonderfully narrated with an excellent story and thoughtful concepts that provoked contemplation beyond the storyline.

Incredible

I loved this reading of this incredible story. The various performances came together so well. I was fully engrossed and pulled in. Unbelievable enough to be believed. I remain a great fan of Mr. Johnson's work.

Original

Loved the story, but the narrator's Jamaican accent and the author's use of what HE perceives Jamaican syntax were awful and inaccurate. Insulting, actually. Almost ruined it for me. If a Caribbean character is used again, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE consult a native in the proofreading process. Otherwise, the story was amazing. I hope there's a sequel. I'd love to see the progress of the protagonist.
