About this listen

In this 1920 best seller, Milt Dale, a lone camper, overhears a conversation that persuades him to leave his forest paradise to save a young woman from certain doom.

After narrowly escaping a kidnapping plot, Milt leads Helen and her kid sister deep into the perceived safety of the forest. The kidnappers are still on their trail to complete their mission but the man of the forest isn't about to let anyone kill Helen and take possession of her uncle's ranch.

Not too keen on the narrator but the story is one of Zane Grey's best in my opinion. Recommend it.

Great book.

Very good story, however the narration seem to be done by a machine, kind of bad, but when he started narrating women voices, then it was almost unbearable to hear, almost wanted to stop hearing the book because of this.

Good story horrible narration

TECHNICAL: Gets a point for not adding music. Loses a point for preceding the story with the author’s bio.
NARRATION: Poor. Falsetto used for females was dreadful. Pacing was singsong and annoying.
AUTHORCRAFT: I’ll never bother with another title from this author. The story was more suited to a short story. Contains a great deal of boring filler. There are blatant errors in plot that I can’t describe without spoiling. Characters are shallow and inconsistent. They occasionally spout brief bouts of saccharine philosophy then bounce back to monosyllabic interaction. Even allowing for the period when it was written, the dialog was choppy and sappy.

Don’t bother.

Great story but the narrator is so terrible that it makes it unbearable to listen to.

Great story, terrible narrator

The story was good but was almost completely diminished by an exceptionally sorry narration. Will never listen to John Bolen again. The story would have gotten a higher rating if it had been better performed.

Poor Productuon

Could not continue listening to the narrator.
I read ~30 of Zane Grey books when I was 12 or so, and now I wanted to listen to them on audible during long commute hours. I know the story, and love the book. This narrator made it unbearable. Had to stop. Do not get this audio book.

terrible narrator.... love the book
