About this listen

After being unjustly imprisoned for the death of her client, midwife Julianne Chevalier trades her life sentence for exile to the French colony of Louisiana in 1720. She marries a fellow convict in order to sail, but when tragedy strikes - and a mystery unfolds - Julianne must find her own way in this dangerous new land while bearing the brand of a criminal.

After being imprisoned and branded for the death of her client, 25-year-old midwife Julianne Chevalier trades her life sentence for exile to the fledgling 1720s French colony of Louisiana, where she hopes to be reunited with her brother, serving there as a soldier. To make the journey, though, women must be married, and Julianne is forced to wed a fellow convict.

When they arrive in New Orleans, there is no news of Benjamin, Julianne's brother, and searching for answers proves dangerous. What is behind the mystery, and does military officer Marc-Paul Girard know more than he is letting on? With her dreams of a new life shattered, Julianne must find her way in this dangerous, rugged land, despite never being able to escape the king's mark on her shoulder that brands her a criminal beyond redemption.

I didn’t know this history, so this historic fiction really touched me. Now mix in that this story was a page turner, I couldn’t stop reading! I think I found another favorite author! Highly recommended!

I hope I don’t spoil this for anyone, but at first I was upset with the first death. So I had to stop listening. Then I started back and was upset with the second death of the book, I had to stop again. Then I had nothing else for me to listen to so I finish the book and was quite happy, especially learning so much about the history of New Orleans. My grandmother is part Choctaw and her last name is French. I always thought it was because she was owned by a very large French plantation, but now I want to look into her history. She died at 110 years old two years ago and she has so many great stories.

It took a couple of times to get through it

Nicely written and portrays a chapter in history not commonly known. Rich with biblical examples of Christ like character it is hard to put down! Definitely recommended!

Excellent plot stirred into historical facts, the 1700s comes to life with excellent writing. The plight of this young midwife grips the reader. An extremely passionate, yet sweet romance folded into the story of New Orleans.

Excellent plot woven into History

This is about as close as i want to get to a classic romance novel. It was a good story and stayed away from too much "heaving bosoms" stuff. My favorite thing is that it followed history well.

Historically accurate fiction

It has been a long time since I’ve listened to a book that I didn’t want to pause. This book kept me drawn in from beginning to end! So many plot twist that I did not anticipate. And then when it ended, it was all wrapped nicely together and encouraged the need for grace.
There was one quote that definitely stood out to me. The main character was having trouble being kind to someone that had wronged her. And another character encouraged her to go through the motions of loving that person and showing grace until her heart could fallow. That was very profound and needed to for so many people in so many situations.
I had never heard of this author, but now I look forward to exploring her other books!

Intriguing

loved the lovely French pronunciation. so much better than my mind guessing how the words should sound. Ms. Green is one of my favorite authors. It is about time someone snatches up the opportunity to record her stories.

wonderful performance to a great story

The book was clean, but did not mask the hardships of the early settlers. And the evil, and good that prevailed.
