Publisher's summary

In medieval Germany, Madlen Goldmann left her passion for medicine behind to live a life of quiet contentment with her devoted husband, Johannes, and their children. But when Madlen's aunt delivers the news that Johannes's father, Peter, has gone blind, Madlen must use her healing skills to help just one more time.

While caring for her father-in-law, Madlen assists a handsome young doctor, Franz von Beyenburg, in a procedure to restore Peter's sight - something she never dreamed possible. When Dr. von Beyenburg invites her to attend his medical lectures in Heidelberg, Madlen realizes it's an unprecedented opportunity to expand her knowledge.

But to do so, she must return to the town where she was falsely accused of murder, face the scorn of her fellow male students, and assuage her husband's unease - all obstacles that seem insurmountable. Will she risk it all to realize her dream of saving lives - whether society is ready for her or not?

I agree

That the first book was better. Good but not one I would like to listen to again. Rather tedious.

The First Book Was Much Better

The sweet mother-daughter relationship nurtured in book 1 seemed to disappear in book 2. Instead of Agatha referring to Madeline as her daughter, she suddenly refers to her as her niece. The warmth and love in the character of Agatha in book 1 is almost completely gone in book 2. What's left is a hardened, cold, critical woman who is unrecognizable. And, the sweet love story between Johannes and Madeline from book 1 is also gone. Left is this apathetic, stale marriage of obligation. I found the tone of this book to be so unlike book 1 that I wondered if it was written by a different person. Also, some of the details in book 2 were not the same or true to book 1. I still rated it with 5 stars because it was a worthwhile read, but I found it lacking and I was disappointed. The plot regarding Johannes and his investigation became convoluted and confusing toward the end. Then it suddenly resolved and I was left wondering which character was actually guilty as I couldn't follow the title with the prior characters. The book ended abruptly without any further relationship building as the family reunites. There are hints of an additional deeper relationship with 2 characters, but nothing is developed there either. In my opinion, this book lacked the depth of book 1 and the heart. I will however look for other books by this author in hopes there is another story with the beautiful, intense relationships she created in book 1 as she is clearly capable.
