About this listen

From the celebrated, New York Times bestselling author comes the twisted thriller of an MIT grad student who unwittingly uncovers the hidden connection between the Gardner Museum heist and the most fascinating secret in American history.

THE CARD SHARK: Hailey Gordon is looking to make some fast cash to help pay her tuition when she’s caught counting cards at the Encore casino in Boston. She grabs her winnings and makes her escape. With guards closing in, she dives into an unlocked room to hide . . . only to find a dead body.

THE EX-CON: Recently released from prison, Nick Patterson hasn’t felt hope in a long time, but the job he “inherited” in prison promises to change that. He enters hotel room 633 to find that the person he was supposed to meet has been murdered. Next to the corpse stands a terrified young woman—Hailey Gordon.

THE PROFESSOR: American history professor Adrian Jensen learns of the death of his professional nemesis, Charles Walker, the night after he received Walker’s latest research. Skeptical at first, Adrian nearly deletes the file. But when one small, new detail catches his eye, he makes it his mission to uncover what could be one of the biggest secrets of the Revolutionary War.

All three strangers find themselves on the cusp of an incredible discovery—one that someone is willing to kill to keep buried.

I enjoyed the hunt!! Science, math, and history all intertwined was so fun, too.

Open ending where is the sequel? We enjoyed it but it felt flat at the end.

Absolutely engaging and one of those books you can hear again and again. I can’t wait for the next one

Thoroughly enjoyed this cast of characters, the history they explored and their adventures. Loved the very engaging chases. If you like treasure hunting, escape rooms and historical fiction you’ll love this book. And read the next in the series!!

Love the adventure, history and chases

I saw this book on a recent trip to Paul Revere’s house. I love the idea of mixing our nation’s history with long lost treasures and intrigues. It’s been done very well before. I picked it up immediately when I saw it.

Throughout the story, an obscene amount of ex machina solutions presented themselves. Things were always just too convenient. Entertaining enough, but very difficult to see past the author’s forced coincidences used to progress the story. And I know this is purely a personal preference, but I was not a fan of the narrator. Too unnecessarily emotive and bouncy. I don’t like false excitement about something as mundane as “and then they walked around the corner.” Emotion in narration is a good tool, but it’s this guy was too upbeat and almost juvenile sounding for a suspense novel. At least for me.

The plot was interesting. I am curious about where the story line will go with the sequel, but not sure I am curious enough to spend money to find out.

Great idea, mediocre approach

Very disappointing. It had such an intriguing start but honestly failed to capture much excitement or cohesion as it moved forward. Bummed.

Not very good

Had me in the beginning. Felt like someone trying to make a davinci code for Boston. Too unbelievable and silly

I did not care for the narrator. His character voice for Haley was quite annoying. I’m originally from the Boston area, so I appreciated the historical aspect and the locations. The story was very far-fetched, in my opinion.

I loved Bitcoin Billionaires so much that I bought this title without hesitation. This book was totally disappointing & I kept waiting to get hooked. Never happened.

The story is weak and the performance amateurish. Sort of like a Marvel mystery. No sense of reality at all!
