About this listen

"Meltzer is a master and this is his best. Not since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have you seen a character like this. Get ready to meet Nola. If you've never tried Meltzer, this is the one." (Harlan Coben)

Who is Nola Brown?

Nola is a mystery.

Nola is trouble.

And Nola is supposed to be dead.

Her body was found on a plane that mysteriously fell from the sky as it left a secret military base in the Alaskan wilderness. Her commanding officer verifies she's dead. The US government confirms it. But Jim "Zig" Zigarowski has just found out the truth: Nola is still alive. And on the run.

Zig works at Dover Air Force Base, helping put to rest the bodies of those who die on top-secret missions. Nola was a childhood friend of Zig's daughter and someone who once saved his daughter's life. So when Zig realizes Nola is still alive, he's determined to find her. Yet as Zig digs into Nola's past, he learns that trouble follows Nola everywhere she goes.

Nola is the US Army's artist-in-residence - a painter and trained soldier who rushes into battle, making art from war's aftermath and sharing observations about today's wars that would otherwise go overlooked. On her last mission, Nola saw something nobody was supposed to see, earning her an enemy unlike any other, one who will do whatever it takes to keep Nola quiet.

Together, Nola and Zig will either reveal a sleight of hand being played at the highest levels of power or die trying to uncover the US Army's most mysterious secret - a centuries-old conspiracy that traces back through history to the greatest escape artist of all: Harry Houdini.

Critic reviews

"The Escape Artist has a magic trick up its sleeve. Part Lisbeth Salander, part Homeland's Carrie Mathison. One of the most memorable characters I've read in years. Look out - Nola's coming. This is Meltzer in peak form." (Lisa Scottoline)

"The Escape Artist is a slingshot of a novel. Brad Meltzer expertly pulls it back and lets it go, propelling the unlikeliest of heroes forward in a high stakes, high tension thriller that never lets you catch your breath. My advice: Buckle up!" (Michael Connelly)

"This novel is like a launched torpedo slashing through 400 pages of deep water before reaching impact. Enjoy one of the best thriller rides ever." (David Baldacci)

Enjoyed it!

The readers make the story even better. I didn't want to stop listening because I wanted answers. I love stories that make me want to continue listening!

Great story

Love Meltzer. I always learn something. I like the twist and storyline kept things moving. Duel narrators made the story flow even better.

Not up to Brad Meltzer's previious book.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I listen to this book and was at loosing the plot, characters and time period. This book would be better if read and not listen to.

If you’ve listened to books by Brad Meltzer before, how does this one compare?

I have either read or listen to nearly all of Brad Meltzer's books and I found "the Escape Artist" one of the least favorable . I would not recommend this book to be listened to, but read

Which scene was your favorite?

There was not one.

Could you see The Escape Artist being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I might make a good movie, with the flash back in time.

A Good Listen.

It was a good listen for the most part. I enjoyed having two narrators but I almost wished they had read the parts in tandem with Brick reading for the Male parts and LaVoy reading the Male parts. Nothing against LaVoy but it through me off when she would read for Zig but at the end of the day, it would probably been more difficult so I understand why they did it. I had originally started reading this based on an interview with Meltzer. I really like how the book starts and most of the in between but I was kind of let down by how the book ended. I though it was a great concept but I expected more from it than what I got.

Gruesome and Graphic

Gruesome and creepy. Very graphic. Definitely not one of Brads better books Not neatly as good as the Culper Ring series.

Fantastic!

So, I binge listened to this latest offering from Mr. Meltzer. Felt like I was moving ninety miles an hour. Once again, he does not disappoint. Also, loved having the male and female voices so well done by Brick & LaVoy. Enjoy!

Hooked.

Hooked from first sentence to the last. Could not put it down. I pride myself on knowing a lot of cool historical facts, but even I learned a lot from this book.
