About this listen

Roberta Rich burst onto the literary scene with this fascinating tale of intrigue set in 16th-century Venice. Working in the Venetian ghetto, midwife Hannah Levi has developed a gift for aiding desperate mothers. When a wealthy count seeks her help in the delivery of his first son, she sees an opportunity to earn the money needed to free her imprisoned husband. But with a papal edict forbidding Jews from providing medical aid to Christians, Hannah is torn between duty and the law - and her choice will put her in the middle of a dangerous conflict.

I really enjoyed this book. As I read I could imagine all the characters in Venice just as I had imagined when I was in the Jewish ghetto last year. It was well written & researched. I look forward to other books by Roberta Rich!

An enjoyable read

I couldn't stop. I think A second book would be ideal. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mesmerizing

The narrator read the story like she was talking to a two year old which made the story seem even simpler than it was. The story lacked complexity and depth. I just couldn't wait for it to be over. I loved The Birthhouse and The Red Tent and this book was a real let down. :(

Wanted More Complexity from the Story and Narratio
