About this listen

Don’t know an IRA from a TSP, or an SCRA from an CZTE? Fear not: The Military Money Manual is here to help.

In this concise, no-nonsense guide, Air Force Major Spencer C. Reese, founder of the popular personal finance site MilitaryMoneyManual.com, offers invaluable tips and tricks to help service members of all ranks, branches, and bank account levels gain financial independence.

Along with laying out the fundamentals of building wealth while serving, the book explains how to take maximum advantage of the unique financial perks available only to service members, whether active duty or reserve, officer or enlisted. Said benefits include special tax-deferred savings plans, preferential bank loans, fee waivers on high-end credit cards, and much, much more.

Personal finance shouldn’t be intimidating or boring. With its candid, accessible tone, The Military Money Manual feels like having a beer with a good (and financially savvy) friend. So pull up a chair, get comfortable, and learn how to make your military money work for you.

I first heard of the author after his website popped up when I was searching for a new credit card. The information on his website was so detailed and helpful that I used his affiliate link to get approved for three American Express credit cards.
I wish I had had a book like this when I joined the Army 15 years ago. I'd definitely be better off than I am now! Everything in this book is right on the money, pun intended. Follow his advice and your future self will thank you.

I’ve been following Spencers blog since I joined the Navy in 2014. It’s been an invaluable asset and this book summarized everything in one nice easy to listen to book. It’s easy to navigate and skip the stuff you may already be familiar with. Well on my way to FIRE thanks in part to Spencers shared knowledge.

Must Read for any new Military Servicemember

Spencer is fantastic and I wouldn’t be where I’m at if it weren’t for his knowledge and sharing of tips. This book is perfect for new Military members!

Wish I had this ten years ago!

Read Dave Ramsey instead of this book if you need a foundational understanding of personal finance (emergency fund, IRA, avoiding debt, etc). Ch 8 was the only chapter that went into the unique advantages the military offered to help you financially (credit card annual fee waiver, combat zone tax exclusion, saving deposit program.

if you read Dave Ramsey just read ch 8
