About this listen

Newbery Medal winner Laura Amy Schlitz—New York Times best-selling author of Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! and A Drowned Maiden’s Hair—creates a magnificent tale about a tiny night fairy who loses her wings and can no longer fly. As Flory the fledgling fairy soars through the dark sky, a ravenous bat bites off her wings. Injured yet determined to live, she’s willing to do what it takes to survive—even if it means befriending a hungry squirrel and becoming a day fairy.

Critic reviews

"Newbery-winner Schlitz writes with strength of vision and delicate precision of word choice. A far cry from the conventionally sweet, whimsical stories about diminutive fairies, this tale begins with violence and ends with redemption. In between is an imaginative adventure story in a familiar, yet exotic landscape." ( Booklist)

Though it is intended for a younger audience, (who would not mind the lighter, sweeter voice) It would do the story a world of good were the narrator to use a bolder and more decisive voice. The main character may be a faery, but she is not a sweet faery, so it left things feeling mismatched and unbalanced.
