About this listen

Soon to be a major motion picture!

The Silent Brotherhood, uncover the chilling depths of America’s racist underground with this investigative true crime masterpiece exposing the inner workings of white supremacist militias and domestic terror groups.

Two courageous investigative journalists deliver an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood”—the most dangerous radical-right hate group to surface since the Ku Klux Klan. They claim to be patriots, as American as apple pie, but they are this nation’s deadly brotherhood—hate groups that package their alienation against the federal government under such names as the Aryan Nation, the Order, and other white supremacist militias.

The group attracts seemingly average citizens with their call for pride in race, family, and religion and their mission to save white Christian America. They spout anti-Black, antisemitic, neo-Nazi rhetoric, and their grievances have festered into full-blown paranoia and a call for an all-out race war. The Order reveals in terrifying detail how the group became criminals and assassins in their effort to establish an Aryan homeland.

I listened to this because I found out Jude Law is going to be in the movie version. So I thought it would be a good listen. It takes a while for the book to develop. But if you can endure it picks up after a point.

OK, I hope the movie is better.

This book gives an in-depth and accurate overview of The Order and the era that produced it. I’ve studied the events, as one of the members (Pierce) was arrested in a town near where I lived at the time.

Founder Bob Matthews is often depicted as a heartless killing machine but this book portrays him as a thoughtful guy who didn’t seem to anger or swear. Think Ned Flanders waving a Nazi flag while armed to the teeth. It was interesting to learn of his sing-song boyish voice, and the narration makes him sound more than a little like Emmett Otter.

Highly recommend.

Excellent Overview of the Era

This isn’t an exhaustive academic look into the fascist movement but it is a very fast and well crafted narrative about the Order

Well written true crime

Read poorly and the story was lame. Hard to believe they made a movie out of this. These numbskulls did pull off some robberies but damn they were bad at it. Makes the FBI look incompetent as well. I haven’t seen the movie but it may be as bad as this.

Not very interesting
