About this listen

Alice has been lying to herself for years, holding fast to the belief that the needs of her family far outweigh her own. But her outwardly successful marriage hides dark secrets, and for much of her life the children were the only reason she stuck around.

These days, though her successful banker son lives nearby, his young wife seems to do everything she can to keep Alice at bay. As for Alice's other son, he has always been something of a stranger and has been traveling for so long that Alice isn't even sure what continent he is on anymore.

Alice can't help but wonder if the effort she expends presenting a united front to the outside world is actually helping anyone and what would happen if she suddenly stopped pretending. Could life, like the novels she devours, hold surprises in its closing chapters? And if she did shake everything up by admitting the truth about her marriage, would anyone be on her side? Has the time finally come for Alice to put her own needs first?

For the first time in years, her heart is racing. Can Alice really change her life? Dare she even imagine such a thing?

Big surprise

This is an amazing book! Biggest positive surprise this year. I don't even recall how I got aware of it -- probably one of the newsletters, or a daily deal -- and it was a deal (read and listen) on KU, so after all, I couldn't lose anything.

I loved the book. There's Alice, the main character of the book. At first, I liked her. Then, I questioned her -- in the end, I understood her.

None of the main characters are --well, you know, heroes, or characters you love unconditionally. They're all with their strengths and flaws, and thus utterly believable.

It's not exactly an easy read for the beach. or something, there's a lot of domestic violence and abuse.
However, I experienced similar in my childhood, so maybe that is why this book tuck on my heartstrings so much.

Anyway, it is a great book, with a great narrator. I can't really comment on the accents, as I'm not a native speaker, but to me, it was perfectly read.

Wonderfully Done!

An ingenuously crafted story with an emotional ending that caught me quite off guard and somewhat stunned! A book I won't soon forget! So well done! I loved it!
And, as always, Imogen Church does a masterful job!

🤏Another Nuclear Family Story👌

A woman is married to an abusive husband and has 2 boys (grew up knowing and witnessing the abuse).
One son is married with 2 kids, (whom are spoiled brats) spoiled himself, self centered, workaholic & rich.
The other son is gay (afraid at first to tell his family), caring, kindhearted & messed up emotionally because of their Dad's abuse. Clearly loves & cares about his mother.
She decides after many years, she is done with the abuse & after witnessing her good friend getting away from her husband...She decides she wants, needs, can & will get away too.
She enlists her sons to help, but will they believe she really is done?
Will they both help her?
Will Ken (her husband) let her go?
What do they all remember & choose not to remember?
Will they take a chance at happiness or is it to late?
A story with love, loss, self awareness, self confidence, anger, fear, strength & a good look at what's inside that's needed to survive.

The only bad thing I can say, is at times it does tend to be OVER developed when it comes to the characters, thoughts & actions. By doing so, it can get a bit tedious & at times drawn out towards the inevitable going ons.

If you can make it through the parts that can put you to sleep, then sure why not give the story a try.

Imogen gets 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 as always!! She does great in all her narrations. No mistakes, perfect emotions where needed and voice changes.
SHE makes it very easy to get attached to all the characters, even the villains that you will love hate.

Narrator terrible with accents.

Good narrator except poor when trying to use Russian. Almost made me shut it off.
