Growing up in a lighthouse on a remote island, Orca Monroe has lived isolated from the world . . . until one day when she finds a cell phone washed up on the beach. Orca has her first conversation with Jack Stevenson, a young man whose older brother, Adam, has gone missing after crashing his seaplane off the coast. Orca becomes Jack's lifeline and his reason to hope that Adam is still alive.

One stormy night, Orca finds Adam Stevenson collapsed on her doorstep. As she nurses him back to health, she finds herself spellbound by his inquiring mind and rugged good looks. Simultaneously, Adam is captivated by her wild beauty and pure heart. But with a ten-year age gap between them—and her father's determination to keep Orca protected from outsiders—Adam knows they can never be together.

Resigned to give Orca up, Adam returns to the mainland-but Jack refuses to leave her trapped at the lighthouse. Blind to the fact that his brother is in love with her, Jack offers to show Orca the world she's always dreamed of. But when she leaves her island for the first time, Orca begins to realize that the mainland may hold more dark secrets than she ever imagined . . . and the two brothers she helped bring back together may be the very people she tears apart.

This book is so well done and so well thought out. It brings you back to your teenage years where you inhaled books in a day.

Wholesome romance

Abbie Emmons does it again in another epic romance. she always has the character you love and the one that gets under your skin. I'm totally team Adam, Jack is annoying. I like how it seems like a Little Mermaid retelling, I'm not sure if she planned that. I 100% recommend.

I love this author

The Otherworld is so much more than a love story— it is a profoundly beautiful story of family, friendship, and the long-lasting impacts our decisions have on others. This book made me laugh, cry, and feel SO MUCH for the characters! The incredible performances by the narrators had me captivated from start to finish! These are the kinds of stories we need more of… do yourself a favor and listen to The Otherworld, you won’t regret it!

I thought it was a beautiful story! Itcould not have been written by a better author, whom I follow on YouTube. She is wonderful and this proves her top-notch talent. Please like and follow her, especially if you read this story of a roller coaster of emotions. Have your tissues!

I love every word of this book. Tension, pure happiness, aching sadness, anticipation, fresh air.... EVERYTHING feels.
Abbie Emmons has the gift of making the reader forget they're reading and totally immerse themselves in the story during which all of it feels so damn real.
When you dive into this book you come out at the end a different person.

An unworldly perfection

I absolutely adore and love how there's good communication skills, emotional intelligence, and an air of good reason to the character's decisions or at least there's a reason for what they do. and I absolutely love that. I personally don't read enough books that have this level of reason. thank you so much for planning your book so much, I hope that I can make a book like that. a work of art like that, where everyone properly explains themselves according to their character. I just love it, to me it's a sign of good writing for sure!! and you ARE A GOOD WRITER ABBIE EMMONS!!!

love the communication skills!

This book was so much more than I expected. I have listened to it eating breakfast, lunch and in the evening in front of the fire place.
I disappeared in to world by Abbie Emmons before I hade time to blink.
The dynamic between the main characters are very well done, and the multilayered intrigue lifts the book to the next level!

Tank you Abbie.

overall, it's well written. it's great story for those who like more contemporary romance and drama.

I really love the way the dynamics between the characters was written. I think that was the part that kept me hooked the most. and there were two poignant moments that really stood out to me. don't read further if you don't want to read spoilers!!

firstly, when Orca went with Adam to Seattle to meet her mother, then her mom went on that rant about having children would be ruining her life. i really was so wrecked when Orca wanted to say "a career can't do such-and-such," and listed all the things a child would do for and with a loving mother. yeah, that one hit me right in the gut.
second, when Lawrence told Orca that he didn't tell her about her mom because he only ever wanted her to know she was loved. bawled like a baby.

Captivating relationships

Overall Impression
I approached this novel with high expectations based on Abbie's reputation, but unfortunately found it disappointing compared to what her debut might offer.
Strengths

Nostalgic Setting: Abbie masterfully recreates the 1990s atmosphere through vivid imagery and period details.
Jack's Determination: The protagonist's unwavering belief in his brother's survival creates a compelling emotional through-line.
Strong Opening: The first half of the narrative effectively builds tension and character relationships.

Weaknesses

Rushed Romance: While Orca's feelings might develop quickly due to her intimate knowledge of Jack through his journal, the relationship feels underdeveloped from the male perspectives.
Inconsistent Character Development: Adam's character lacks sufficient internal struggle to justify his emotional shifts, making his eventual love confession feel unearned.
Implausible Character Decisions: Despite Jack expressing interest in seeing the world, his decision to join the Air Force feels abrupt and disconnected from his predominantly bratty characterization throughout the book.
Psychological Superficiality: Several scenes suffer from insufficient psychological depth, rendering emotional moments less impactful.
Unconvincing Family Dynamics: After Jack discovers Adam's secret relationship with Orca through her forgotten journal, he confronts them at the hangar and finds them kissing. The resulting fight leaves both brothers injured, with Jack suffering a busted lip and bruised stomach. Rather than holding Adam accountable for his betrayal, the parents inexplicably side with him. Jack's mother cries and guilts Jack while his father questions his manhood and demands he apologize. This one-sided treatment is just awful and the way the parents react to the fight contradicts realistic family dynamics of the 1990s and highlights the persistent parental favoritism toward Adam throughout the narrative. The parents' dismissal of Jack's justified feelings undermines the emotional authenticity of the story.
Problematic Character Motivations: Neither male lead presents a convincing romantic interest:

One protagonist's desire to keep Orca "pure and unpolluted" feels patronizing, especially considering his hasty profession of love.
The other treats her as an accessory rather than a person with agency.

Inauthentic Dialogue: Jack's speech patterns lack the authentic 1990s slang that would be characteristic of his personality, making his vocabulary repetitive (overusing words like "wuss"). Words often used in the 90s were “chillax” “da bomb,” “punk” “buggin” “dip” “gay” (granted some of these words are now offensive, but still it’s a period piece about an almost 30 year old falling in love with a severely sheltered 18 year old). I think we could have handled some authentic slang.

While the novel shows promise in its world-building and premise, the character development, family relationships, and romantic storylines ultimately fail to deliver a satisfying emotional experience.

I plan to read more books from her because I genuinely love her YouTube channel, but this was not it for me and I was a homeschooled (until high school) 90’s baby that dated a 34 year old man at 19.

Great start, disappointing journey to a predictable ending*Spoilers*
