About this listen

Rebecca Soler, narrator of Marissa Meyer's The Lunar Chronicles, returns to narrate this program.

“Narrator Rebecca Soler delivers a take-no-prisoners performance for the third title in The Lunar Chronicles. Her instinctive delivery of Meyer's humor makes the story an addictive listen. Series fans and new listeners will be equally entranced.” —AudioFile Magazine on Cress

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In Heartless, Marissa Meyer's stand-alone novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

This needs to become a movie ASAP

I'm not a fan of any version of Alice in Wonderland but this.... this is such a great book, such a great story, and so sad. I absolutely loved it! And I'm sure it'll be a book I'll listen to again and again. Now off to buy the hardback copy.

MY FAVORITE ALICE IN WONDERLAND WORLD EVER!!

Would you consider the audio edition of Heartless to be better than the print version?

hmmmm That is tough because I love real books but due to a busy lifestyle I listen to them most of the time now but when its a favorite as this one is, I purchase the real book to add to my bookshelf for just in case a Hurricane hits and we have no power or if I have down time and can really read. =)

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Joker - his addition to this breathtaking twist on a story we all grew up on is fantastic.

Which scene was your favorite?

OHHHHHHHHHHHH THE WHOLE BOOK!! I'd say the tea party. That was amazing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Truth Behind Wonderland

Any additional comments?

I devoured this book. I am a huge fan of Marissa Meyer's work. When I saw this book and what it was about I couldn't wait to start!! As soon as the book finished, I restarted it over again! Twice! I couldn't get enough of it. This is such a believable story about how the Queen of Hearts came to be who she is. The whole time, even after I finished it the first time I would plead that the ending would be different and that she wouldn't become the Queen of Hearts we know and grew up with! The story line was clever, humorous, engaging, addictive and lovable! By far my favorite book I got to listen to ever! I can't wait to see what worlds Marissa creates next!!

One of the best prequels to a fairytale

What did you love best about Heartless?

I loved the absurdity that was Cath's life before she took on a more absurd role. She is basically powerless, surrounded by responsibility and strange people and dreams just out of reach, and then love is plopped right into her lap in a time where she cannot really have it. It's not really a love triangle; it's just heartbreaking to watch Cath fall in love only to know the outcome, that somehow she becomes the crazy old villain in Alice's Wonderland, and the journey is beautiful and agonizing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Hatta and appreciated Marissa Meyer's play on words and names. It truly felt like a Wonderlandian tale, everything belonging in this weird world. I enjoyed seeing this version of Hatta, before he became mad, and what was revealed about him by the end, his relationships with certain people and his past. It was very interesting.

Have you listened to any of Rebecca Soler’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She read The Lunar Chronicles, of course, before Heartless; all of those performances were brilliant. I liked how she went between her narrative and accents for the characters in Heartless though. It's unfair, I think, to compare this one to The Lunar Chronicles because they're so different, but I personally I enjoyed what she did with Heartless slightly more than with Cinder and the rest.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My heart just broke into a million pieces. I felt so sad by the end of it; it was one of those endings you knew would happen, expected it, but still foolishly hoped for a different, better outcome. It was crushing and devastating, which is why I think it was so successful.

Excellent performance

I was impressed with this narrator in The Lunar Chronicles for keeping track of all the characters and their voices, but this book takes the cake. She gives each character a distinct voice and personality, which really helps build the dramatic tension!

The story is fascinating, and you can't help but hope that somehow things will resolve in a happy ending...even though the Queen of Hearts as we meet her in Alice in Wonderland is a far cry from the girl we meet at the beginning of this story.

Not quite as engrossing as Lunar Chronicles, but the world building is great and keeps in line with what we would expect from Wonderland while simultaneously being new and inventive.

Looking forward to more books by this author!

Another fun listen!

I really enjoy this authors twist on classic fairy tales. Loved the Cinder series as well as this take on Alice in Wonderland. The story was interesting with lots of intrigue and some romance too. I like that there is no foul language or explicit sex in any of these books. They are suitable for tweets as well as adults. Just a overall fun little book to listen to when you don't want anything heavy or serious?

Origin of the Queen of Hearts

The reader was amazing and really brought the story to life with rich, diverse "personalities".

A prequel to the Queen of Hearts

I really loved the Cinder series by Meyer. Classics are called such for reasons. While Cinder was a re-imagining , this was more a prequel. We all know the Queen of Hearts from Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, so of course this book has no happy ending, but it was intriguing to pick out little details that ended up being origins of things that happen in classic Wonderland. No dull moments, everything mattered in this story.
