About this listen

A Quest for Freedom

All Americans are familiar with the story of the Pilgrims--persecuted for their religion in the Old World, they crossed the ocean to settle in a wild and dangerous land. But for most of us, the story ends after their brutal first winter at Plymouth, with a supposedly peaceful encounter with the Native Americans and a happy Thanksgiving.

Now, through the vivid memoirs, letters, and personal accounts in The Pilgrim Chronicles, you will discover the full, compelling story of their anguished journey and heroic strength. Award-winning historian Rod Gragg brings the Pilgrims to life in this lavish guide filled with moving eyewitness narratives. From their persecution in England and painful exile in Holland to their voyage across the Atlantic and their struggle to survive among the Indians in an untamed wilderness, Gragg takes you on the harrowing and inspiring journey of a people seeking religious freedom.

A must read for all Americans. This should be added to our History classes in school.

I loved it!

The book helps to understand the Pilgrims and we hear their words throughout the book. Especially interesting that the colony started as a commune but soon found that private ownership was far more efficient. These were possibly the only Europeans that actually respected the Indians and dealt with them honorably. The Pilgrims are a significant factor in shaping our country. And next Thanksgiving I'm serving lobster!

Excellent history instead of myth

This was excellent! An accurate history of the pilgrims with historical letters from the period and taken from William Bradfords book on the Plymouth colony. I like Plymouth plantation in MA, but it lacks the truth of the real reason the Separatists came to America!

If you don’t mind listening to Bible verses and about SUPER faithful, original European immigrants, you may enjoy this as much as I did.

The Mayflower originals battled religious persecution, attacks from the Indigenous people, disease and death. Yet they were able to live in peace with the tribes around New England for fifty years. The Europeans on the Mayflower dealt honestly, honorably and they respected the “savage” customs.

However, from the very start, did they want to grub up all of this land’s riches! Immediate shipments of timber, sassafras and beaver pelts were sent back to England to pay their way.

I want to know my direct ancestor’s role in the “founding” of the US. This book was a great beginning in my education.

A good start for this pilgrim/puritan descendent

This is not only well-written but wonderful to listen to. Every student in school should be required to read or listen to it. Such a blessed beginning to the founding of our nation, as referenced in the closing statement.

Phenomenal book

Great Book! Was the first time I heard all these written accounts in one place.

The only thing I didn't like was that I think even though it was indeed important a d was the cause of the Pilgrims voyage to America, the author spent too much of the book talking about pre-pilgrimage England and it's religious turmoil, I would have liked more emphasis on the Colony.

Loved it!

I enjoyed this book very much. It gives an appreciation for the many brave folks that risked everything.

Well Done and Educational

What a heroic story of Faith, courage, and perseverance that brings to light our American Founders history. Thanks to all who contributed!!

Great and True History of America

This retelling of the Mayflower voyage is burdened with superfluous details like inventory lists which is tedious and made more so because the narrator frequently mispronounces elementary words. For example, "chasm” pronounced 'ka-zem’ and not 'cha-zem'… The audiobook is slow moving otherwise and the narrator is an unfortunate distraction.

Cringey Narrator

There was a lot of detail before the pilgrims set sail and not enough detail about the trials they faced in the years after setting up home in America. I read this interested in finding out more about what life was like for the first generation and beyond and it just isn't here.
