About this listen

In the year of our Lord 1141, civil war over England's throne leaves a legacy of violence, and the murder of a knight dear to Brother Cadfael. And with the gentle bud-strewn May, a flood of pilgrims comes to the celebration of Saint Winifred at the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, carrying with it many strange souls, and perhaps the knight's killer.

Brother Cadfael's shrewd eyes see all: the prosperous merchant who rings false, an angelic lame boy, his beautiful dowerless sister, and two wealthy penitents.

Critic reviews

"Peters continues to provide the type of superior medieval mystery that has spawned a host of unabashed imitations." (Booklist)

A great listen overall

Superb narration, multi level story line, and outstanding character development. This is my second listen and I thoroughly enjoyed it again!

My favorite so far

If you're reading the series in order you will find this at delightful coming together of all of the storylines and characters of the previous books. This was definitely my favorite of the stories so far in the series.

I should have listerned to the later version

This Medieval murder mystery (12th century) is available in two versions from Audible. I selected the wrong one! It would be impossible to overstate how horrid the narration is. The voice is very, very wrong and narration is drastically over performed.

This is the 10th book in the immensely popular 21 book (and TV series) Brother Cadfael mysteries written by Edith Pargeter using the pen name Ellis Peters. The books in the series were released between 1977 and 1994.

very minor audio mistakes

there are a couple times where the audio repeats, but it's not a big deal

Nicely done.

Each book is worth a listen and it's well read. I was happy to have a character come back from a few books ago. No spoilers : ). I'm looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

Many small repetitions

I really enjoy this series, but unfortunately this book contains quite a lot of small repetitions. But the story is engaging with a surprising ending.

Weird Repeated Paragraphs

I love the Brother Cadfeal novels and the narrator here does a very creditable job with this one. But the editor should have done better. Several times throughout the work an entire paragraph was repeated - verbatim - for no discernable reason whatsoever. I did not pause play or multitask at all. Just every so often, a paragraph would be repeated. Very weird and more than a little annoying, since every time it shattered the mood that had been built up.

Impossible to listen to!

I listen to, rather than reading, books for the added enjoyment of a great narration. I gave this one 10 minutes - should have read and believed the reviews. Hope I can return this one. Truly awful.

truly terrible narrator

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

most annoying reading I've ever suffered through. Had to turn it off after 10 minutes.

Would you recommend The Pilgrim of Hate to your friends? Why or why not?

not with this reader

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Roe Kendall?

anyone who doesn't make all the characters sound like half-wits

Love Cadfael stories, but can’t handle this narration

The narrator has a lovely natural voice, but listening to her over-perform a predominately male series of characters is agonizing. Great narration (to me) should fade into the story until it’s part and parcel of the tale. This narrator, instead of enhancing the story, constantly distracts from it by attempting to drop her register and create distinction between character. I had to return this after a few minutes of listening.
