As England's civil war draws to a close, two travelers arrive at Cadfael's herbarium door: the dark-eyed Ciaran who has vowed to walk unshod as a kind of penance and, his companion, Matthew. When Cadfael's old friend arrives with a tale of murder, the youths' puzzling association becomes darker and more inscrutable.Solve another medieval mystery with Brother Cadfael.©1984 Ellis Peters (P)1994 Recorded Books, LLC Crime Fiction Fiction Historical Mystery Thriller & Suspense Traditional Detectives Detective

I've listened to all of the Patrick O'Brian series, Sharpe series, and now most of the Brother Cadfael novels. In each of these series Patrick Tull does an amazing job with the narration. His voice and skill as a reader adds tremendously to my experience as a listener. When you have a choice, select the edition with Tull as the narrator. Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter) has done a wonderful job with this series. From the first, the characters have grown and become more fully developed. It is a wonderful way to enjoy a first class murder mystery and feel you're in the 12th century as well.

Patrick Tull adds greatly to this series.

Any additional comments?

As all the Brother Cadfael books, this one follows a formula, i.e., a murder by person unknown, Brother Cadfael's clever unraveling of the mystery, and young love blossoming in the background. However, the twists and turns can still surprise (and delight!) even the expereinced reader, who has been through a number of the chronicles.

Another Nice Addition to the Brother Cadfael Saga

The story and narration is very good. However, technical issues were the problem with the tracks ending in the middle of a book chapter and book chapters beginning and ending in the middle of a track. For example while listening to track chapter 9, book chapter 11 ended and book chapter 12 started

The young girl, sister of her devout brother, and love for a troubled companion of a selfish pilgrim.

What does Patrick Tull bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

That deep Welsh voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions. I thoroughly enjoyed.

Ellis Peters At Her BEST!

It's nice to delve back sometimes and imagine life to have such idealistic people in it. Many people are far to good in it and honorable, but its a story after all and stories with honorable people are inspiring.

Fantastic story

The reason for my giving a low rating to this book is because this is the 5th Audible book in this wonderful series where the Audible doesn't match with the Kindle written version. I couldn't read along as I like on my Kindle Fire. The recording would stop everytime I attempted to read.. So now I will check my library or do without the Audible. The reader was excellent; I just couldn't follow along.

Another fantastic story from Ellis Peters. Brother Cadfael really shines in this one. Patrick Tull is by far the best narrator of this series, and his voice makes Brother Cadfael come to life.

I care so deeply about these characters. I forget the murder motif and fall into the mercy rising action. Here is tenderness under tension. Every Cadfael mystery is far far more than a who-“dunnit.” It is more “who are you” which will keep you reading the series and weeping when the final period is placed.

All that is Good

I’ve been a fan of Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael series for over 35 years. I enjoy the thoroughly researched historic component as much as the characters, the writing and the mystery itself. This performance of these audiobooks is the perfect addition to this beloved series for me.

Beautifully read.
