Amity Whitford dared to stake her own claim on the endless plains of Western Kansas. She built her homestead, Dove's Nest, with her bare hands. But the ravages of the sun and drying winds took their toll.

I like historicals.. .But the execution of the storyline left me cold. Amity seemed to be quite a modern heroine. Her desire to go it alone unrealistic. I didn't get any historical flavor from the story. Parts that were described were boring... Parts that she skipped over writing (such as her journey west, and her first nights on the homestead) are skipped. At times I felt I was being told the story rather than shown the story.
I found myself bored after about 45 minutes of listening. Although I am intrigued about what happened to Amity and why she lost her job, I found myself not caring enough about the character or buying into the authenticity of the setting to care.
