About this listen

In the days of pre-Civil War slavery - the unforgettable novel of a shocking portion of our American heritage. The time was not all magnolia blossoms and crinolines. It was more than romance and splendor. It was debauchery and slavery, gambling tables and dens of iniquity. It was murder and forgiveness. It was all the great contradiction of life in a golden era...

Some parts I cringed listening to but over all it was an intensely good book!

It was a good story

Not a story for the younger audience. The book contains quite offensive language and taboo gratuitous sex scenes. That being said, if you are able to set aside personal moral judgements and accept it as just a fictional story, then the tale is actually a good listen. Narration made the book.

Must keep an open mind

made me uncomfortable. unnecessary sex and incest that had no bearing on the story. the narrator sounded like a snake oil sales man the whole time. too dramatic.

If you could sum up The Plantation in three words, what would they be?

The steamy sexual scenes could have been eliminated, I just skimmed over them, and missed nothing as far as plot was concerned. I loved this story. The action never slowed. Great audiobook.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I'm in the middle of the road on that one, but leaning slightly toward "yes."

If you’ve listened to books by George McNeill before, how does this one compare?

No.

Have you listened to any of Chet Williamson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Chet made the book.

Was The Plantation worth the listening time?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

The book could be summed by two phrases -- "I'm a Deavers, dammit" along with "and his penis hardened." The story was all right. A little predictable at times but not bad. The regular sex scenes made it feel more like a trashy romance novel than a serious novel. I ended up knowing more about all of the male characters' "hard penises" than what they thought at a soulful level. The narrator made the story, though. Bravo, Chet!

This isn't a romanticized, Gone with the Wind type of story. This is the story of human natures, good and bad, of love and deceit, of beauty and utter madness!

The Dirty Old South comes alive!

The book was very good BUT, the graphic sex scenes were very unnecessary. I Would not recommend for young readers..

Excellent book BUT

Highly recommend! Author McNeill shows us the Old South in a good story with involving characters. I appreciate the author being brave enough to use the N word, as it would have been used in MS in the pre-Civil War south and describing some of the worst and painful aspects of slavery.

A little to much sex talk. Not necessary for the overall content of the story.
