About this listen

In August 1831, Nat Turner leads a group of escaped slaves in a rebellion that rocks the South. The revolt comes to a quick and violent end. In November, Nat is publicly hanged, and as his body swings, a false sense of peace washes over Jerusalem, Virginia.

Unbeknownst to the world, on the day Nat Turner dies, his son, Nat Hope Turner, is born. Reared by Big Mama on the Turner plantation, young Nat's identity is kept secret to keep him safe. As Nat grows to manhood, he leads his own uprising against slavery and is forever after known as Black.

Fate - by way of Big Mama - leads Black to rescue a young female slave, Sunday, before the plantation owner can sell her. Black has lived for liberty until the day he comes face to face with the alluring Sunday. As the two embark on a sexually charged ride toward love and freedom, they set off a chain of events that forces Black to risk his own liberty for hers.

Black shares the appealing tale of a passionate love between a man and a woman bound together to change their destiny.

Great story and presentation

After getting many suggestions for this title from various book groups online I decided to give it a chance. I mean who doesn't like Jacobi Diem? Book is very well written and I loved every minute of it. the author was very descriptive of the characters and you can also see them as you listen. I really enjoy this audible.

Ok

I am glad that I bought this audio book. The story and the lessons conveyed were good. I do think the author went overboard with the love making scenes. Way too many with way too much detail...every time. It got old.

It had everything!

I usually avoid anything to do with slavery because it is so painful. However I was influenced by others talking about the book and wanted to understand what they were referring to. Especially when the narrator talked about the bathtub’s meaning. Now I get it. Great job by the author and narrator. Thank you for this story Ms. Vassar. On to the next book in the series.❤️

Black - Wow

I really enjoyed not only the story of Black and Sunday, but also the rest of the people of Fort Independence. Jakobi did an amazing job with the narration as usual. He really brought all of the characters to life. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Amazingly Informative and Descriptive

This novel had me on pins and needles waiting for each chapter. I suspect, this is the other side of slavery rarely told and articulated in such a way that puts you inside the scenes as a bystander as everything unfolds. I highly recommend it as a must read/download to everyone!

Awesome Writing & Narration!

This story was more than I could have hoped for! First of all Jakobi Diem narrated and when I tell you he nailed every character, I mean he nailed it!! The story itself is just beautiful. A true love story. I am new to Joan Vassar but can’t wait to hear more of her stories.

Great Story, Amazing Narrator

This was an empowering story that just happened to be set during slavery. It's also a love story, but with lots of action.
