Little is known about the Ancient Greek oral poet Homer, the supposed 8th century BC author of the world-read Iliad and his later masterpiece, The Odyssey. In subsequent editions, Whitman continued to revise and expand his poems - but none matched the raw power and immediacy of the first edition. Emily Dickinson was one of the most reclusive of all poets.
