About this listen

Delapore. A name with a history. A history of unspeakable atrocity; a history of black arts; a history of hatred, and terror.

Delapore. It's just a name, now. In this case, it is the name of a man returning to England to reclaim the lands of his family. The name of a man who knows the skeletons in his family's closet - or so he thinks.

Delapore. Surely it is possible to outlive the past. Surely it is possible to outrun one's ancestors, to outrun history, to outrun fate. Surely a man's destiny lies in his own hands, and not in the misdeeds of men a hundred generations dead.

Beware, England. The last Delapore has come home.

This is a full-cast, soundscaped audio dramatization of a classic work by one of the masters of horror, featuring the voice of Harlan Ellison as Delapore.

Editorial reviews

Brad Strickland’s adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s gothic story of madness, generational cannibalism, and how the past tinges the present is hauntingly performed by the Atlanta Radio Theater Company, accompanied for the occasion by the award-winning science fiction icon Harlan Ellison. This tragedy of "cosmic horror" begins with what seems like a great gift, an ancestral English manor. It continues with the discovery of an infamous family legacy with ancient, forbidden practices, and ends with the continuation of a curse that once known by a descendant of the house of Delapore can never be escaped. Multiple voices and sound effects create an almost hallucinatory auditory experience lingering long after all else is silent .

Marvelous Performance

The Atlanta Radio Theater Company did an exemplary production of Lovecraft. This particular story has a touch of controversy with it's original source material given the original name of the Delapore Cat. Not willing to upset the audience, they brilliantly used a simple creative solution towards the old racist controversy. By doing so, it doesn't distract from the atmosphere of the story.

Additionally, every spoken word had my complete attention and the production did Lovecraft justice in demonstrating the insanity and horror of the story. Great set up, gripping fallow through, and an ending only Lovecraft fans can predict.

Awful!

Not at all what I expected & story is different than the one I know. Terrible narrating, don't waste you money.
