About this listen

When a battle with death-dealing Skinners catapults Daine and her mentor, Numair, into the divine realms, the riddles of Daine’s past finally begin to reveal themselves. However, the pair must return to their beloved Tortall, for the kingdom is under attack and survival depends on Daine’s wild magic.

A harrowing journey across the divine realms leads Daine and Numair through danger to dragons; to a breathtaking confrontation with their great enemy Ozorne; and finally brings Daine face to face with the Great Gods, who will force the girl to make the most important decision of her life.

Filled with breathtaking peril, lightened by deft moments of comedy (wait till you meet the darkings!), The Realms of the Gods is a fitting conclusion to one of the great fantasy series of our time. An exclusive interview with Tamora Pierce about writing The Immortals Quartet concludes the recording.

Editorial reviews

The author and a full cast narrate the story of Daine's journey to the immortal realms. There she and her sorcerer companion, Numair, seek allies as they prepare for their final battle with Emperor Ozorne and the chaos goddess. For those following the series, the last installment is an essential listen. As a narrator, author Tamora Pierce's slow, clear delivery allows listeners to take in the story's rich settings and magical details. Her dry humor communicates itself through small shifts in tone. When other cast members chime in, the vocal levels remain constant, showing the care invested in the production. Pierce faithfully represents the characters of her story, injecting such quantities of wonder and sadness into her voice that no listener could remain unmoved.

Critic reviews

"The fast-paced, violent action is leavened by bits of humor as well as the blossoming romance between Daine and Numair. All in all, a satisfying ending to an appealing saga." ( Booklist)

Another great book by Tamora Pierce. It really made me think and open my eyes to things I had forgotten about. A great reread and inspiration for things in the future.

Another adventure that weaves it's magic spell and draws the reader into another realm! I especially enjoyed the author's commentary at the end. A real treat!

Favorite author, her books never get old. Diane has been my go to character since I was young. I was drawn to the character because she is always in flux. she may not always not the changes with grace but she evolves eventually.

Loved as always.

Good story, full cast was fun, it sounded odd until I changed the playback speed to 1.25x. After that I enjoyed it immensely!

Speed up playback!

Amazing conclusion to one of my favorite series of all time. I’ll definitely listen to these again in the future to relive Daine’s journey and growth throughout, and perhaps revisit some of the other series I didn’t have time to finish as a teen. The interview with the author at the end was also a nice touch and inspiring to young writers about the whole process of writing and creating your own world.

Great Conclusion

Dane’s character combines elements that are unique and creative without being overpowering. She is a balance of strong convictions and naivety that endears us to all.

I am satisfied with the book's conclusion, or at least my teenager self was when I first read it something-years-ago. I was always alright with Tamora's narration because it was supplemented by a full cast of other narrators. I was always happy to have Numair get the spotlight whenever possible, haha! Maybe that's why I was okay with the book and with how long Numair and Daine spend in the Divine Realms. This is the case of the performance saving the book for me. Yes, it was well written as usual, but there were some glaring problems--the biggest being that problems only seemed to be glossed over instead of properly concluded within the text. However, I have a soft spot for this series, and am willing to overlook some things. Overall, I'm happy that I started and ended this journey.

A Good Conclusion
