Ambitious Daily Sentinel journalist Lauren King is chaffing on LA’s vapid social circuit, reporting on glamorous A-list parties while sparring with her rival - the formidable, icy Catherine Ayers. Ayers is an ex-Washington political correspondent who suffered a humiliating fall from grace, and her acerbic, vicious tongue keeps everyone at bay. Everyone, that is, except knockabout Iowa girl King, who is undaunted and unimpressed and gives as good as she gets.
One night a curious story unfolds before their eyes: one political launch, 34 prostitutes and a palette of missing pink champagne. Can the warring pair work together to unravel an incredible story?
This is a lesbian fiction with more than a few mysterious twists.

Ice queen and country hack
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
I have to get the mental image of someone being as “antsy as a horse climbing stairs” out of my mind now. Dr. Pepper keeps shooting out of my nose at inopportune moments when I think about it. 🤣
Loved it

Primarily this is a mystery infused with a slow burn romance between caustic veteran print journalist Catherine Ayers and entertainment reporter Lauren King, who dreams of covering politics and becoming a serious journalist. When Lauren stumbles upon something unusual while covering a corporate event one night, the two women decide to work together to uncover the story.
Because Winter was once a journalist herself, that aspect is wonderfully realistic and the mystery cleverly written. Catherine is as icy as they come and Winter makes Lauren - and us - wait for the romance. But when the ice queen finally thaws... let's just say Lauren isn't the only one melting.
I've heard Mei narrate other books by Isabella and Erin Wade so it took me a minute to adjust to her performing a Lee Winter book. Having been familiar with the story, I didn't hear Catherine or Lauren's voices that way in my head, but by about three chapters in I was invested and rolling right along. Early on, Mei mispronounced the name of the newspaper, the Sentinel, but someone must have given her a note because she corrected that throughout the rest of the book. This was probably my favorite of the works I have heard her perform. Primarily it was because the material was so good to begin with, but also as she progressed through the story she really settled in. By the end when there is a whole long list of texts that Catherine sends Lauren, she actually had me laughing out loud.
If you're able to read this book rather than listen, I would go that route. This is a good listen - but if you had no preference one way or the other, I believe the better experience would be in written form.
Realistic, smart and sexy!
