You'll find stories of heroism, love, and adventure such as a panicked bachelor faced with an arranged marriage, a man battling a blizzard to get home for his child's birth, a Viking shield maiden exploring a new world, and a young boy torn between love for his ailing grandmother and duty to an empress. Faith L. Justice's collection of historical short stories introduces readers to intriguing, relatable, and sympathetic characters living in time periods spanning the ancient world, through colonial America, and up to the present day. I particularly enjoyed her pair of stories about the imagined past of her German ancestor in pre-Revolutionary Pennsylvania. John Lutz is an eminently likeable character because he's a bit of an underdog. Other underdogs in her collection include a plucky Roman boy who is a thief - and a swamp rat. The audio performances by Gordon Rothman and Justice herself give rich, warm voice to Justice's creative vision. These stories are definitely worth a read - or a listen!
