About this listen
A devastating plague is sweeping the continent of Greater Virren....
Its origin is unknown, its dominance of the land near complete. In times of grim desperation, pestilence has given way to superstition, and the citizenry are now more divided than ever.
Yet the city of Rothenberg remains inexplicably untouched....
The council has grown convinced of their immunity, even as their neighbors are consumed before them. As the world teeters on the brink of collapse, a zealous religious order has reemerged. They claim to have discovered the source of the plague...but can they be trusted?
The plague will never reach Rothenberg....
Katarina Lorenz, a noble of the city and veteran of the civil war that shook the continent, remains unconvinced. She conspires to leave the city with her companion Tannhauser to find out what's really going on beyond its walls.
The Ritual is the first in a trilogy of gripping high-fantasy novelettes. The debut possesses all the beloved hallmarks fans of the genre will recognize, but is distinguished by its gritty atmosphere and confrontation with some of the most unsettling chapters of human history.

Thomas Ligotti’s debut collection, Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and his second, Grimscribe, permanently inscribed a new name in the pantheon of horror fiction. Influenced by the strange terrors of Lovecraft and Poe and by the brutal absurdity of Kafka, Ligotti eschews cheap, gory thrills for his own brand of horror, which shocks at the deepest, existential, levels.

Story
Many years ago, Sir Aelfric and his nine companions saved the world, seizing the Dark Lord's cursed weapons, along with his dread city of Necrad. That was the easy part. Now, when Aelfric—keeper of the cursed sword Spellbreaker—learns of a new and terrifying threat, he seeks the nine heroes once again. But they are wandering adventurers no longer. Yesterday's eager heroes are today's weary leaders—and some have turned to the darkness, becoming monsters themselves. If there's one thing Aelfric knows, it's slaying monsters. Even if they used to be his friends.

Story
Wen Alder was born into two worlds. On his father’s side, a legacy of proud loyalty and service to the god-like Sienese Emperor spanning generations. And it is expected that Alder, too, will follow this tradition by passing the imperial exams, learning the accepted ways of magic and, if he serves with honor, enhancing his family's prominence by rising to take a most powerful position in Sien—the Hand of the Emperor. But from his mother he has inherited defiance from the Empire, a history of wild gods and magic unlike anything the Imperial sorcerers could yet control.

Lannick deVeers used to be somebody. A hero, even. Then, he ran afoul of the kingdom's most powerful general and the cost he paid was nearly too much to bear. But now an unexpected encounter casts Lannick upon an unlikely path to revenge. If he can just find the strength to overcome the many mistakes of his past, he can seize the chance to become a hero once more.

Story
Dead things have been found in the fields of Enfaire, a God-fearing town north of Reams. Not just dead things, but twisted forms…unholy shapes. And there are rumors of a blasphemous union and of fell creatures that haunt the night. Yet even as plague and witch pyres blacken the sky, the town remains untouched by the malady that has already claimed thousands and will claim thousands more. It is here, in Enfaire, that an old Franciscan friar and his ward take shelter from a storm. It is here, in a little town on the edge of civilization, that they will have their faith truly tested.

Story
Midstadt used to be a monarchy. Until it wasn’t. Now, 100 years after the blood of the last king flowed from the steps of Parliament Square, another rotting empire has the jewel of the Ragged Sea in its sights. It means to bring them into its fold, to swallow up the fledgling republic before the fires of its industries can sweep across the world. While anarchists wage battle with monarchists beneath the streets, and war brews in the South, Sergeant James Delwar and the officers of the Meridian Watch begin an investigation that will take them to the heights of the old aristocracy.

I am engrossed!
Thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish, my only gripe is there currently isn't more.Every scene is set out in a perfectly immersive fashion with the accompanying score and sound effects adding the best amount nuance to make it believable. The narration didn't feel forced and I felt drawn further and further into the story by Scott Miller's exceptional range of voices and velvety smooth recital of the book itself. The characters and brilliantly laid out scenes result in a unique story within a familiar genre. Mitchell Luthi has me engrossed in the world he is creating and I cannot wait for the next installment. Bravo

Fantastic!
Sentinel Creatives, in collaboration with Citadel Studios, have done an incredible job of bringing this short tale to life, and the attention to detail is just incredible! Scott Miller’s performance as the narrator, and many of Greater Virren’s inhabitants, is believable and entertaining; and the sound effects and original score are fresh, immersive, and of a very high quality. I really hope this wasn’t a once-off, and that they’ll work alongside Citadel Studios again for the next installment of the Plagueborne Series, as this audio drama is a significant cut above the rest.
