About this listen

There is no plague in Enfaire....

Dead things have been found in the fields of Enfaire, a God-fearing town north of Reams. Not just dead things, but twisted forms…unholy shapes. And there are rumors, too, of a blasphemous union and of fell creatures that haunt the night. Yet even as plague and witch pyres blacken the sky, the town remains untouched by the malady that has already claimed thousands and will claim thousands more.

It is here, in Enfaire, that an old Franciscan friar and his ward take shelter from a storm. It is here, in a little town on the edge of civilization, that they will have their faith truly tested.

His Black Tongue is a tale of medieval horror, plunging the listener into the plague-torn land of 14th-century France when pestilence and death walked hand-in-hand, and life was little more than a sputtering candle, waiting to be put out. But there are worse things than death, than sickness and decay…and it comes upon leathery black wings.

Includes The Bone Fields novella and the short story, "The Knights of the Non-Euclidean Table".

So I went into this book blind and didn’t realize there were separate stories! I was trying to connect the dots only to realize they won’t be connected. Oops!

I enjoyed The Bone Fields story the most, but even then, it was just ok. I think I didn’t get attached to the characters enough. I liked the settings, and the concepts were interesting enough, but I didn’t get scared or really interested due to lack of character development, and for that I give it fairly low rating overall. For the author: keep writing! You have good imagery and the adventures are spooky, just work on getting the reader invested way more into the characters.

The Bone Fields was the standout story for me

Definitely an interesting take on classic mythologies. The stories are vivid and violent but overall fascinating.

Beautiful imagery and incredible performances.

Not every one was a home run for me but on the whole I enjoyed the curveballs I was thrown. Worth your time.

Quite a mix.

I’m sure the story is fine, but I can’t hear the narrator over the music and obnoxious sound effects

Terrible production

I checked this book out after reading Between Two Fires by Chris Buehlman. This book is a sorry pastiche of that. The setting is fantastic and the tone is perfect at first. However, none of the plot twists come as a surprise as the foreshadowing here is like a cast iron pan upside your head. The climax is like a Dragonball Z episode; tons of exposition, lots of one liners, a heaping helping of “your soul will be mine”; a Mary Sue protagonist.
The production is fine. The climax was a little muddled with the audio being what it was. I made it about 3 hours in before I was rolling my eyes and wanting more out of the story. I can’t recommend this audiobook.

Setting is great. The rest? Derivative and cliche.

The story can become a bit confusing at times but can always manage to pull you back in with the action.

It has potential but it’s not the greatest.

The only great thing about this book was the setting and atmosphere the author set up. The rest of this book was a large bag of MEH! No suspense, typical b-movie horror gore, and average plots.

The first story was good with a nice twist at the end... and the last story about the knights from King Arthur’s court had so much potential but was terrible.

Don’t waste your credit.

1 good story out of 4... waste of a credit

I really enjoyed the first few chapters but lost interest around the last chapter. The book is made up of smaller books it seems and the very last one was just something I wasn't too interested in. I would have loved to listen to the first and second all the way through but they end in cliffhangers

good but lacking!

it was almost impossible to warm up to characters, most of the stories were extremely predictable.

great performance, somewhat weak story

i truly enjoyed the first story. everything about it was attention grabbing and immersive. the plot, the reading all felt like i was right there. However…. the second story just couldn’t keep my attention because i feel like the plot was lost at some point. the last story wasn’t really immersive at all, felt like something i’ve heard before. really wish there was a full book/continuation of the first story it was excellent in every way

EXCELLENT start….meh finish
