About this listen

An arrangement she cannot refuse. An attachment he cannot deny.

Elizabeth Bennet never expected that answering an advertisement for a lady’s companion would result in almost immediate marriage and widowhood. Destitute and hopeless after her father’s death, she accepts the position as a means to provide a home for her family, but is daily baffled by the abrupt ways and inscrutable motives of her employer and benefactor, Mr. Darcy.

Fitzwilliam Darcy had a simple plan: secure a steady companion for his younger sister Georgiana and a wife for his father’s dying ward, to prevent a neighboring estate from falling into the hands of George Wickham.

Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect answer...a little too perfect. As her sweetly impertinent character encourages Georgiana and wins the respect of the village, Darcy’s own heart begins to fall for the woman whom honor forbids him even to think of.

When a legal challenge brings into question Elizabeth’s rights to the estate, Darcy must find a way to mend old family breaches and reveal secrets better forgotten. Will he permit himself to reach for the one who holds his happiness? Or will events conspire to take her forever from his life?

The Rogue’s Widow is a clean Regency variation of approximately 50,000 words.

good storyline

the storyline was good and made logical sense. the only problem I had was that the narrator paused too often in the reading, sometimes after every single word. I sped the pace up to 1.25 and it was much easier to listen to.

highly entertaining!

read the book first and enjoyed it thoroughly but Harry Frost's reading captured the spirit of the book and it's characters. He made enhanced the experience as some performers are able to do highlighting Ms. Clarkston's wit with his own wry humor.

No delay in start

What I love most about this book was there were no dead parts. The book got right into action and never had any lulls. Different from other variations and still kept to each characters true nature aside from Richard and Anne but they fit the story well.

Sweetly Solid Pride & Prejudice Variation

Nicole Clarkston is a solid writer who keeps the spark of Lizzie Bennett and Mr. Darcy true to form. Very enjoyable, feel good book. Jane Austin would be proud.
Harry Frost does an EXCELLENT job voice-acting and would be a secret weapon to any writer.

ODC meet at Pemberley

This story starts with a completely different premise, after the death of Mr. Bennet, but arrives somewhat awkwardly at the same conclusion.

Mr. Frost has a wonderful voice but, once again, his cadence is a little off putting. He has a tendency to elongate a single syllable, then pronounce another at a “normal “ pace, then speeds up several words together, as though he is trying to catch up.

Ms. Clarkston tends to write in a prose very similar to Ms. Austen, often very elaborate and descriptive. It can be beautiful to hear and absorb in the hands of the right narrator. In a recent JAFF Binge Fest, I’ve listened to 3 of her works with 3 different narrators and I have a distinct preference. It was, unfortunately, not Mr. Frost.

Harry Frost 👍

Nicole Clarkson is a favorite of mine especially when she does satirical humor.. She does great dialogue with witty banter. She’s a more sophisticated writer and wordsmith than many others who delve in P&P revisionist art. I found her by searching for books narrated by Harry Frost who is entertainment itself but especially when it requires humor. He gives Darcy the perfect voice and likable character with a perfect Elizabeth foil. I love when there’s a new to me book by Clarkson/Frost an immediate purchase. Another favorite by this duo is Nefarious. A surly Darcy is gruffly vulnerable and empathetic. More like this please.

love and happiness

Darcy discovers as easy as it is to arrange the love life of others only work when they are willing. Try as hard as he might arranging his love life is not easy at all.

A interesting twist on Mrs Wickhsm

The narrator was awesome and kept my interest. The story was an interesting twist on Mrs. Wickham having Elizabeth marry Mr. Bernard Wickham to keep his estate from his younger brother. Mr. Darcy had arranged it to help Elizabeth and her family but to keep the estate in good hands. The story was interesting and kept me wanting more.

I tried to return it…

The narration was flawless, but the story and characters were a bit of a waste as a P and P variation. This is very different which is what I was looking for, but I could’ve wished for more tenderness even during their vexations. the motivations and personalities of the characters move them in ways that weren’t quite plausible. It just felt like a waste of time and money. I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t paid for it. :-/
