Publisher's summary

Six months ago, Ava Black fell from her Queen Bee status. Once she ruled the halls of her high school without mercy, crushing her enemies and stepping on anyone who dared stand in her way. Now, amongst the peasants, she does everything she can to avoid her former friends, mainly Frankie the new reigning Queen, who now bullies her relentlessly.

Ava has accepted her fate, sticking to the shadows, knowing that karma has come to call. Plagued by debilitating migraines that steal her strength and sometimes her sanity, Ava does all she can to just survive. She knows that having a normal high school experience, friends, and fun is something of the past. That is until Keira Richards, their new exchange student, comes in and shows Ava she’s still worthy of friendship.

The two girls form a quick bond and Keira forces Ava to get out, experience life, forget about the nightmares of robed figures, ancient battles, and whispers of Thyana. She did so well for a while. But then Gabriel Matthews, the handsome loner, brings it all back to the surface. He seems to know a lot about her migraines, her dreams, and her past.

With dark and terrible things seeming to befall those around Ava, she’s desperate for answers. Can she and Gabriel move past their differences to figure out why she’s seeing these robed beasts roaming through their school and the streets of town?

Excellent First Installment!

This book dropped right before I started my latest road trip and I'm so glad it did. I love the other books I've read by Porter, and though I hadn't heard of the narrator previously, she's now high on my list of favorites. Ava is so relatable to me and the tension in the story will keep you tuned in, even if it means sitting in the parking lot pretending you haven't arrived at your destination yet just to squeeze in one more chapter.

This is simply amazing

This was such a fantastic tale of American Indian and old world tales that is simply amazing to listen to and the narrator really brings out the story

Enjoyable story.

Got this book after meeting the author at a convention and I had a good time listening to it. Honestly there was this one moment with the head priestess that really made me stop and ask “did she just say that?” It was hilarious. Look forward to the next one.

Engaging narration compliments the plot

As an avid audiobook fan and podcast listener, I know that the narrator/speaker can have a tremendous impact of the listener's enjoyment. This book is the perfect combo of an engaging plot with a narrator who moves with ease between the voices and perspectives that shift with each chapter.

I don't often leave audible reviews, but I felt compelled to because if you've ever heard a narrator who is too bland or too dramatic, you know how hard it is to enjoy the story.

Ali Dane is skilled at capturing the essence of the characters in an authentic way, and I was so engrossed that I finished this audiobook in one weekend! I

I look forward to listening to more of her narrations!

Witch and her guardians

Great narration. I’m a little confused with the storyline but hopefully this will make more sense in book 2. I want to know where the rest of the descendants are? Or are they all dead? And if they are all dead (even if they don’t have powers) why is the guardian group still around?

All will be revealed I guess in book 2 I will continue this series.

Teenage angst

It was a good interesting story. Ava was hard to like sometimes. I understand she is only 18 and full of teenage angst, but all of her self involvement and repetitive anger over everything gets old. I understand her self loathing and anger at everything is an important part of who she is for what she will come up against. I hope the next book of her journey will show more maturity as she tackles all that she is and what is required of her to succeed and save the day. I enjoy her building relationship with Gabriel. I look forward to seeing how their relationship grows.
