About this listen

"Michael Lesley's upbeat narration captures all the whimsy, humor, and heart of this YA superhero romp.... This sweet queer coming-of-age story will please listeners looking for something fun, surprising, and affirming." (AudioFile Magazine)

An Indie Next Pick!

Some people are extraordinary. Some are just extra. TJ Klune's YA debut, The Extraordinaries, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves.

Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fan-fiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?

After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life).

Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl meets Marissa Meyer's Renegades in TJ Klune's YA debut.

Great Book. Perfect Pick for Voice Actor.

Buy this audiobook. Usually I’m grading books in the LGBT YA genre on a curve. They aren’t exactly known for their exceptional storytelling. This is quite the exception. It was clever, hilarious, well-developed, and exceptionally well written. I don’t really laugh out loud at books very often, but I did so at multiple points during this book. And, seriously this voice actor knocked it out of the park. This is one of those rare cases where I feel that voice acting actually added something to a book.

If I had one gripe, it would be that the characters’ motivations can sometimes seem unrealistic, but I never felt that got in the way of the book, and, well it’s a book about superheroes. It’s not exactly intended to be hyper-realistic or believable.

Must Read!!!!

Michael Leslie absolutely slayed this narration. This book was everything I’d hoped for, laugh out loud funny, with heart, and side characters with as much depth as the main characters.

Highly recommended for all ages .

The main character is painful, but ends well.

Revised review: I struggled with this book but I'm happy I finished it. Its a bit painfully obvious. You see everything coming and waiting for the main character to catch up may give you a headache. Looking forward to seeing the main character develops in the next book. hopefully its a bit faster.

Perfect in every way.

I read and listened to The Extraordinaries last year, but I guess I never reviewed the audiobook!
I love this book so much, so much! Nick is the most precious 16yo boy ever- the world is not worthy of him.

The Extraordinaries is so fun, but also extremely heartfelt. Nick is so wonderfully endearing and clueless and precious, I just adored him. I loved the relationship he had with his dad, it was so heartwarming and realistic. And the friendships in this book are ones we'd all be so lucky to have.

This story was just so delightful. Nick with his absolute obsession with a certain superhero, his wanting to be a superhero himself, his cluelessness over his feelings for Seth, his pure obliviousness at times, it was almost too much for my heart to handle. I enjoyed seeing his growth throughout the book, and how, as fun as this story was, it was also full of teachable and learnable moments. I liked the way the heavier issues were handled, and that things weren't glossed over but dealt with in a realistic way.

Michael Lesley is such an incredible narrator. His performance in this book is *almost* as good as it is in Tales from Verania! He really puts his all into these characters and makes them feel so real, like they could walk right out of my phone. You could just feel Nick's embarrassment and obliviousness, his dad's frustration and love, Cap's snarkiness, Seth's sweetness. I really enjoyed the way he performed Gibby and Jazz, I could just imagine them coming to life in certain scenes. Michael's voice and TJ's words are a match made in heaven.

Another great book by TJ “Book Daddy” Klune and Narration by Michael Lesley

This book is one that I wish I would have been able to listen to when I was a teen and just coming out. The way the characters are so supportive of each other and Nick reminds me of how Naive I was when I was that age. Mr Lesley makes all the characters voices stand out and you truly get an in depth feel for them. TJ with his first Delve into YA still has those lines of humor you will appreciate from having listened to previous books and he brings what’s in his imagination right onto paper. If you close your eyes it’s like a movie you don’t need the visuals because of how amazing his writing and Michael’s narration mesh. I highly recommend this book it’s a must listen

An underrated gem in teen romance

I loved this book. I admit at first I thought it was going to be a little too straightforward (pardon the pun) for me. But then the plot kicks in and the feelings I felt were just peak good time vibes. Go into this book expecting a fun, fast paced, getter started teen romance. I laughed I cried, I started over and listened again.

4****

I expect nothing less from TJ Klune: a great fun story, sassy gays, and twists and turns. Though the story rambles a bit at times, it’s full of heart and wit. Awesome narration by Michael Lesley. Props for all the dialogue and voices to round out the world of the story.

I absolutely loved this

I have ADHD so I can't really remember specifics of what my favorite bits are but I loved it all... Except that last bit which kinda made me cry. But it's so lovely to read a m/m teen story with super powers
