Publisher's summary

Three thousand years ago, the world fell into darkness, when the great black mouth of the Rot ravaged the land. Across the glorious library city of Aradabar, its dark tongues hammered down, leveling the glass towers of learning and entombing the bookyards in a thick blanket of lava. Only a single child survived the devastation: an infant with a prophecy carved into his skin, promising the rise of a hero powerful enough to slay the Rot for good.

Now that child is a young man, beginning to question the meaning of his many scars....

Now those scars are hunted by a jealous king, ruler of a brutal industrial city, where a thousand bizarre castes toil away like slaves....

Now a dark beast is watching, an Unforgiven, seeking to fulfill a promise made long ago....

And now the Rot has returned, its great black mouth gaping large in the sky, bringing chaos and fear to a world where no heroes endure.

great story

It took a bit longer to get into the flow of the book as I was paying alot of attention to the passing details on the Dr. Moreau type races of people...completely superfluous to the story.

Loved it

First off Jonathon Davis is always amazing at his narration. The book jumps around a lot into lives of the charters which keeps things interesting. Its was a pleasure listening to!

not a huge fan of how it was written

The way it was written I couldn't tell if it was written for an adult or a teenager.
and the writing was lazy.

and the lore is weak, every time he would describe how something looks he would compare it to the same made up berry or the same made up bug, no variety.

also the end was very anti-climactic and although it was a cliffhanger I really don't care what happens in book 2

the narrator did a good job but I feel like it was edited poorly

Constant Struggle

I thought I would really enjoy this, but ultimately it was an oddity too far. The world, plot, and characters are so foreign to this reality that it makes for a novel so far removed from entertainment or fun that all I could think about was everything else. I wouldn't be shocked if this was a documentary of another planet and another life. But it's a documentary so dull that you can only enjoy it if you're a professional adrenaline junkie.

I have a habit of finishing any novel I've ever purchased and I've only ever failed once. This was very nearly the second time. I couldn't get into it and I didn't care and I think that is a true miracle because it doesn't take much to catch my attention, but this book didn't do it in a single moment of the nineteen hours I listened.

start slow end slow

Dont waste your time. 55 chapters of disappointing story, a.whiny main character, and nothing gets resolved. Complete waste of time and battery.
