About this listen

Northamptonshire, 1810: As a new canal network snakes across the landscape, a vicious mob stakes its claim to the county. Every local constable is out on the hunt for the ruthless Panther Gang. When an elderly man is robbed and murdered in sleepy Middleton, the beleaguered magistrates send for help from London's Bow Street Police Office.

Detective Stephen Lavender and Constable Ned Woods soon discover there's more to William Sculthorpe's demise than meets the eye. Mystery surrounds the old man and his family, and the stench of revenge hangs heavy in the air. Are the Panther Gang really responsible or is something more sinister afoot? As Lavender delves further into long-hidden secrets, Woods has demons of his own to contend with: ghosts from his past that stalk him through the investigation.

Uncovering decades of simmering hatred and deceit, Lavender and Woods must use all their wit and cunning to solve this evil crime.

This is a good mystery within a mystery with lots of twists and turns of plot. I hope there is more to come from this author.

Interesting history and great fiction.

The story was labyrinthine and based on real events. Great mystery and the performance was stellar.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It's a very gripping story with lots of intrigue and plot twists! Complicated enough that I didn't see it coming, but not crazy implausible out-of-nowhere solutions.

Just as good as the excellent predecessors!

This is my favorite in the series so far. I’m not overly fond of Magdalena and she plays a smaller part in this book than in the previous two but that is not the only reason.
I enjoyed the mystery more than the previous two—it was big enough to really sink my teeth into.
I really liked that Woods had a larger part to play.
The setting was well fleshed out without the sadly too common looong tedious ten paragraphs of flower sky trees chirping birds sweeping meadows blah blah.
And the author notes at the end increased my interest.

Narrator remains fabulous.

Best so far! Off to jump into book 4!

Michael Page is a superb narrator. He is able to present many male and female voices , while keeping each one's unique authenticity throughout the story. The plot and sub-plots are fluid, historically accurate and engaging. I can't get enough of this series.

loved the historical details. I also loved that Lavendar was more human this time and let certain bygones go. Glad to see he didn't arrest the womenfolk.

Great detail and character build. bought them all
