About this listen

Some people keep diaries that merely record the forgettable tidbits of their daily life.

Dorothy Rose Nolte Hughes had one of those. But after her passing, her cherished granddaughter Cherry found another one that proved to be the tell-it-like-it-really-is version.

It revealed family secrets that may have otherwise been buried forever; the romantic conspiracies of two generations.

Granny's spunk shined radiantly through each page. She'd turned some colorful phrases; earthy to be sure, and perhaps for some, even blush worthy.

For Cherry and husband Gene, who with their six Doxie kids had spent their everyday with Granny during her physically challenging last months, this new-found treasure was delightfully funny. And deeply endearing.

They discovered the true power of fairy tales; like those that had transported herto happier places and happier times during her somber last days.

But the fairy tale that was Cherry's last gift to her grandmother, was the best one yet.

Humorous Adventures of a Feisty Grandma

What made the experience of listening to The Second Diary the most enjoyable?

The narrator did an excellent job with this book. She was able to seamlessly switch voices from character to character. The narrator has a very soft, soothing voice that is very easy to listen to. This book was definitely made more enjoyable to listen to because of the skills of the narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

I absolutely loved hearing about the adventures of this feisty old grandma. Granny had melaughing so hard I almost cried. Granny reminded me of my own dear grandmother who was equally feisty and strong-willed. I could imagine the spunky little old lady in my head as I listened to her stories. Everyone should keep a diary and write their life story for future generations to enjoy.

What does Patricia Santomasso bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator did an awesome job with this book. She has the ability to flawlessly switch from one voice to another to bring each of the characters in the book to life. The book was already a very good book, and the narrator made it an awesome book that I would highly recommend to others.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed so hard I almost cried. Some of Granny's comments, such as "He dilled my pickle" had me cracking up. This little old lady was a breath of fresh air. She reminded me of my childhood and my own wonderful grandmother.

Any additional comments?

I loved the stories about the dogs and the fact that they were all named after famous people. I enjoy dog tales, so the canine adventures were an added bonus.
